Ridley's
Believe It Or Not—May 19, 2014:
Kudos to California Chrome and hope the horse gets an exemption for the nasal
strip for the Belmont; today is the holiday wasteland of all holidays. Hope you enjoyed the weekend and, if in California, the cooling temperatures and will
enjoy these meager holidays, or celebrate in a culinary fashion, found for
today along with the factoids and quotes.
1. Wooly Bully Day—honoring John Quincy
Adams who signed into law in 1828 a
tariff law protecting sheep farmers in
the United States from foreign competition (created by the Alaskanpoet on this
day).
2. Malcolm X Day—celebrated in very few
places like Berkeley—this man was about as far away from the philosophy of Martin
Luther King, Jr. as one could be.
3. National Devils’ Food Cake Day—even if the list of
holidays is nonexistent, at least you can enjoy a great tasting cake.
On this day
in:
a. 1848 in a “to the victor belongs the spoils moment”, Mexico signed the treaty
of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican-American War of 1848 and ceding California,
Utah, New Mexico and the parts of 4 other future states to the U.S. for the sum
of $15 million.
b. 1962 a birthday salute to President
Kennedy was delivered at Madison Square Garden, the highlight of which was Marilyn
Monroe’s rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
c. 1963 The Washington Post published
Martin Luther King’s Letter from the Birmingham
Jail calling for an end to segregation in Birmingham; his arrest in April
of 1963 and the campaign to end segregation in Birmingham was credited by many
as the birth of the Civil Rights Movement.
Read
the speeches and works of Martin Luther King, Jr. and you will see why segregation,
thank God, did not have a chance to prevail. “We did not
hesitate to call our movement an army. But it was a special army, with no
supplies but its sincerity, no uniform but its determination, no arsenal except
its faith, no currency but its conscience.” Martin Luther King, Jr. Why We
Cannot Wait
