Ridley's Believe It Or Not--May 17, 2014 This Day In History-Armed Forces Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 17, 2014: Hope all are getting ready to enjoy the weekend and will enjoy these holidays, or celebrate in a culinary fashion, found for today along with the factoids and quotes.
             1. National Famine Memorial Day (Ireland)—commemorating the Irish Potato Famine  Ireland from 1845-1852 in which one million Irish starved to death and another one million emigrated.
             2. Armed Forces Day—celebrating and honoring since 1950  by Presidential proclamation, the contributions and sacrifices of our brave men and women serving in the armed forces of this country.
            3. World Information Society Day—created by the U.N. General Assembly in 2005 to promote awareness of the societal changes being brought about by the internet and to reduce the digital divide.
            4. Preakness Stakes Day—second leg of the Triple Crown first run in 1873 and won by California  Chrome today making the horse if successful at the Belmont in three weeks to become the first horse since 1973 to win the Triple Crown.
            5. National Cherry Cobbler Day—another favorite desert especially served a la mode.
On this day in:
            a. 1792 the New York Stock Exchange was founded.
            b. 1954 the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education outlawed segregation in public education.
            c. 1990 the World Health Organization removes homosexuality from the list of psychiatric diseases.
Reflections on Brown v. Board of Education by a truly great man in American history: “To all men of good will, this decision came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of human captivity. It came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of colored people throughout the world who had had a dim vision of the promised land of freedom and justice … this decision came as a legal and sociological deathblow to an evil that had occupied the throne of American life for several decades”   Martin Luther King, Jr.
