Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 6, 2019 For those of us
who harbored hope that a return of Blues to control the House might bring a
sense of civility and compromise to the People’s House that hope looks to be
forlorn when followers of the socialist darling of the Blues, Ocasio-Cortez’s
followers responded to a twitter debate with Scalise on her economy wrecking
idea of taxing high income taxpayers at 70% with tweets like “snipe his a—“
which prompted Scalise to terminate the discussion (can’t debate with an
ideologue whose followers support violence); Pelosi did not condemn Blue
Representative Rashida Tlaib’s calling for impeachment of Trump and labeling
him a mother f##k while Ocasio-Cortez defending the call and the profanity;
Trump hauled out verbatim quotes from Obama, Clinton, Schumer and Biden
supporting a wall that they now consider immoral (what changed their mind as
the flow of illegals and drugs and terrorists continues? Animus for Trump
trumping what is needed by the country); another Red Kansas Senator Pat Roberts
has announced he will not seek reelection in 2020; government shutdown
continues with Pelosi firm on her pledge that not one dollar will be
appropriated and Schumer indicating the government must be reopened before
Blues will even discuss the issue (Blues really need to listen to the Border
Patrol and look at the evidence that walls work instead of closing their ears);
Costa Rica an oasis of safety and magnet for tourism is losing that reputation
with an increase in crime including crime against tourists; the House
introduced HR-1 For the People Act which would impose requirements on ethics,
campaign finance, voting, redistricting and social media disclosure of political
ads over $500 and tighter restraints on social media use by foreign entities
(since it also mandates that the president and vice president but not members
of Congress disclose their tax returns good chance that even if passed by the
Senate, it will be vetoed); in Chicago on the first day of 2019, nine people have
been shot at least two of whom have died.
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Poisonn,
factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that this government
by and large is not a oblocracy and a relevant
quote from President
Roosevelt on our goals in the beginning of 1941, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. 1. National Take a Poet Out to Lunch Day—since most poets
do not make a lot of money but enhance the quality of our lives, a great
observation to celebrate by taking a poet out to lunch.
2. National Take Down Your Christmas Tree Day—all good things
have to come to an end especially when the needles start to fall and the tree
is getting drier by the moment and more of a fire hazard.
3. 1989 Number One Song— the number one song on this day in 1989 on a run of 3 weeks
in that position was “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison. Here is a recording
of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2r2nDhTzO4
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day as we move from words beginning with
“n” to words beginning with “o” is “ochlocracy” which means a government
by mobs which is what we have seen two often with the antifa protests.
5. The Prophet--celebrating the birth on this day in 1883 of Lebanese-American
Khalil Gibran essayist, art and poet who wrote The Prophet but while the pen is mightier than the sword, the
bottle is not and he died in 1931 of cirrhosis of the liver from his
alcoholism.
On this day
in:
a. 1912 German geophysicist Alfred Wegener presented his theory
of continental drift.
b. 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his State of
the Union with its “Four Freedoms—of speech, of worship, from fear and from
want.”
c. 1950 the United Kingdom recognized the People’s Republic of
China causing the Republic of China of Taiwan to sever relations.
d. 2005 Edgar
Killen, a member of the Klu Klux Klan, was arrested for the 1964 murders of
three Civil Rights volunteers, Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner, in Mississippi. He
was found guilty, sentenced to 60 years and died in prison on January 11, 2018
6 days prior to his 93rd birthday.
e. 2017 Estaban Santiago-Ruiz
opened fire with a pistol in a terminal at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport in Florida
killing 5 and wounding 6 others; he was arrested within 90 seconds of starting
to shoot, was diagnosed as schizophrenic and plead guilty, receiving 5 life
sentences.
Reflections
on America’s goal in the beginning of 1941: “We Americans are vitally concerned
in your defense of freedom. We are putting forth our energies, our resources
and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a
free world. [...] This is our purpose and our pledge." Franklin D.
Roosevelt 1941 State of Union Speech.
