Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For
January 22, 2019 Senator Ernst has filed for divorce alleging that her husband
was abusive and revealed that she did not pursue the vice president slot
because of the abuse in her marriage (Pence is a solid guy but having Ernst on
the ticket would be a big plus in 2020 and likewise with Nikki Haley); on the
war of women front the “investigation” of Keith Ellison of assaulting his
girlfriend in 2016 has cleared him; on the Covington Catholic School front,
most of the early vitriol has disappeared but celebs like Debra Messing and
John Cusack are still lambasting the students and Kathy Griffin is making the
ludicrous demand that they be doxed; Representative and poster child for the
left AOC demonstrated once again how far she is from reality, claiming that if
we do not address climate change the world in 12 years will end (we could end
all fossil fuels and the CO2 from India and China would into the atmosphere
would wipe out our reducing trend); Trump’s compromise to end the shutdown goes
to the Senate this week for a vote (are there 7 Blues who will put country
ahead of part and tell Schumer to take a hike by voting yes to send the plan to
the House to put pressure on Pelosi to do the same thing); former acting
director of ICE has ripped Chuck Schumer for putting his hatred of Trump ahead
of the nation’s security (this pathetic tyrant confuses legal immigration with
illegal immigration that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose); Pelosi
still has not indicated whether Trump will be able to give his SOTUS in the
Capitol on the 29th but the White House is moving forward even if it
has to have the speech in another venue (Pelosi comes across on this like a
spoiled two year old and her behavior shreds any credibility that she will
negotiate in good faith on the wall and border security); Philippine President
Duterte who demands the death penalty for drug use is backing a bill that would
lower the age for juveniles to be tried as adult from 15 to 9; the teacher
strike continues in Los Angeles with the union demanding more money when its
members are failing completely to educate students with only 40% of the
students meeting standards for literacy and only 30% in the case of math (talk
about a need to have more charter schools.
As always, I
hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Cristina
Aguilera, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that we
do not have an oligarchy other than perhaps in the realm of campaign financing and
a relevant quote from Seth Godin on Steve Jobs and the Macintosh, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings,
or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a
unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the
recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Roe v. Wade Day—commemorating the
landmark decision by SCOTUS striking down laws banning abortion as
unconstitutional, a decision that to this day has polarized this nation between
the pro choice movement and the right to life movement.
2. National Polka
Dot Day—celebrating
the use of polka dots on clothing which started to appear in the 19th
Century and on the cartoon character Minnie Mouse in the 20th
Century.
3. 2000 Number One Song— the number
one song on this day in 2000 on a run of 2 weeks in that position was “What
A Girl Wants” by Cristina Aguilera. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpspGHeLOPE
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of
the day as we move from words beginning with “n” to words beginning with
“o” is “oligarchy” which means government by the few which describes
Russia to a tee given the influence of wealthy oligarchs.
5. King Of Soul Not
On A Roll—celebrating the birth on this day in 1931 of noted singer Sam
Cooke aka the King of Soul who after a night of drinking took a woman to a
motel room in Los Angeles who escaped from him and after he entered the motel
office to demand where she had gone entered into a altercation with the manager
and ending up being shot and killed by her.
On this day in:
a. 1946 the U.S. created the Central
Intelligence Group, the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency.
b. 1979 the 747 purchased by Pan
American Airlines flew its first commercial flight from New York to London’s Hathrow
Airport.
c. 1947 KTLA the first TV broadcaster
west of the Mississippi River began broadcasting in Hollywood.
d. 1984 during a commercial at Super
Bowl XVIII Apple introduced the Macintosh, the first consumer computer with a
mouse and graphical user interface.
e. 2002 Kmart became the largest
retailer to file for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11.
Reflections on the Macintosh
and the creative genius of Steven Jobs: “One of the talents of the [late] great
Steve Jobs is that he [knew] how to design Medusa-like products. While every
Macintosh model has had flaws (some more than others), most of them have has a
sexiness and a design sensibility that has turned many consumers into instant
converts. Macintosh owners upgrade far more often than most computer users for
precisely this reason.” (p.98) ― Seth Godin, Unleashing the Ideavirus: Stop
