January 18, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Thesaurus Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For January 18, 2019 Pelosi continues looking like a complete fool, claiming Trump has endangered her plan to junket into three countries including Afghanistan as a cable from State Department in Kabul urged Pelosi to delay the trip as the press in Afghanistan would learn of the booking and be able to predict with certainty the arrival time (the White House has denied the leak and the MSM predictability has attacked Trump for cancelling the military aircraft and ignoring the broader question of why she should be leaving the Swamp for a week insuring the government will remain shut during her absence); an uncorroborated bombshell from Buzz Feed that liar Cohen is alleging that President Trump urged him to lie before Congress concerning a hotel project in Moscow (serious charge which should be subject to the observation that Cohen is desperate to do anything to reduce his sentence but if true could prove to lead to impeachment or resignation; Trump is being advised to ignore Pelosi’s request to delay SOTUS or hold it in another venue for the simple reason that security issues raised by Pelosi are completely bogus and raised only to deny Trump access to the American people and expose Schumer and Pelosi to the idiocy of their position on border security; the White House has announced a second summit will be held in February, date and location not set; more than 200,000 people attended the anti-abortion March for Lives Parade held in Washington, D.C. today in the bitter cold; John King of the Cack News Network pondered whether Karen Pence should be stripped of Secret Service protection because she teaches at a private religious school that is anti-LGBT; the governor of Illinois signed a law requiring gun dealers to be licensed by the state as Chicago on Monday celebrated the first day in 2019 that had no reported cases of gun violence.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Toni Braxton, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you with your spouse are having oikonisus thoughtsand a relevant quote from Marion Barry on the rights of Congress,  secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1.  Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25)—observed since 1908 and more important than ever as Christianity finds itself under attack often by violent means throughout the world.
2.  Thesaurus Day—celebrating the birth on this day of Peter Roget in 1779, the author of Roget’s Thesaurus which through the use of synonyms unchains a writer or speaker from the chains of monotony of using the same word over and over again.
3. 1997 Number One Song— the number one song on this day in 1997 on a run of 11 weeks in that position was “Un-Break My Heart” by Toni Braxton. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2Rch6WvPJE
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day as we move from words beginning with “n” to words beginning with “o” is “oikonisus” which means a desire to start of family which hopefully involves a spouse as opposed to boyfriend or girlfriend.
5. A Pair Made in Cinema Heaven—celebrating the birth on this day in 1892 of Oliver Hardy, noted actor and comedian who made 107 films with Stan Laurel who like Hardy was a heavy smoker but unlike Hardy was slim. In 1956 Hardy due to heart problems lost 100 lbs but suffered several strokes with a final fatal one on August 7, 1957.
     On this day in:
a. 1788 leading elements of the First Fleet carrying 756 convicts from England arrived in Australia.
b. 1983 the International Olympic Committee returned the Olympic Medals won by Jim Thorpe in the 1912 Olympics for the pentathlon and decathlon.
c. 1990 Mayor Marion Barry of Washington, D.C. was arrested in a FBI sting operation for cocaine use and possession and was tried, convicted and sentenced to 6 months in prison. Amazingly after release in 1992 he successfully ran for City Council and Mayor in 1994 to serve until 1999 and then successfully as a member of the City Council.
d. 1993 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is officially celebrated in all 50 states.
e. 2005 the Airbus 380, the world’s largest airliner is unveiled at Toulouse, France.
Reflections from a man who probably used far too many illegal drugs: “What right does Congress have to go around making laws just because they deem it necessary?” Marion Barry I suspect knowledge of the Constitution was never Marion Barry’s strong suit.
