Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For February 9, 2016, 346 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term. Interesting theater on the political front today as the nation’s first primary in New Hampshire is now being held as Mother Nature is bringing snow and cold to escort the voters to the polling places. Trust your Taco Tuesday is off to a great start and you are looking forward to enjoying Popeyes leg and thigh special for $1.49. As always, I hope you enjoy Tuesday’s holidays and observances, a music link to Sly and the Family Stone, factoids of interest, a relevant quote by Mark Twain, looking forward to enjoying a bagel with lox, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like Valentines’ Day birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Mardi Gras—great day to be in New Orleans today celebrating Mardi Gras which is one really great party to sate one’s partying desires before the beginning of Lent. Definitely this is an event that should be on your bucket list.
2. Safer Internet Day—commemorating the need to promote safe use of the internet to protect children from predators and unsafe behavior and given the proclivity of groups like ISIS to radicalize and recruit using the internet the observance should be expanded to promote closing those fanatics’ access to the internet.
3. 1969 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1969 on a run of four weeks in that position Every Day People by Sly and the Family Stone. Here is a link to Sly and the Family Stone performing Every Day People: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JvkaUvB-ec
4. National Bagels and Lox Day--celebrating a really great way to start breakfast especially if you add capers, onions and cream cheese.
5. Death Is Not Fiction—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1981 of James Sullivan aka Rev, songwriter and drummer for Avenged Sevenfold who after writing Fiction died three days of an overdose of prescription drugs at the age of 28.
On this day in:
a. 1825 after no candidate received a majority of the electoral votes, the House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams as President of the United States.
b. 1870 President Grant signed a joint resolution of Congress creating the U.S. Weather Bureau, forming the basis for countless jokes about weather predictions gone awry.
c. 1895 William G. Morgan invented the game Mintonette which later became known as volleyball.
d. 1964 the Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show watched by a record 73 million television viewers.
e. 1971 the Sylmar Earthquake, a 6.7 earthquake, in 12 seconds of shaking killed 64 and caused more than $500 million in property damage.
Reflections on Mardi Gras in New Orleans: “It has been said that a Scotchman has not seen the world until he has seen Edinburgh; and I think that I may say that an American has not seen the United States until he has seen Mardi-Gras in New Orleans.” Mark Twain in a letter to Pamela Moffet March 1859. Having experienced Mardi Gras in 1970 when Al Hirt was the grand marshal, Mark Twain was right.
