December 11 History International Mountain Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—December 11, 2014:    Trust your Thursday is going well one and that you are bracing for another round of Christmas parties.  As always I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and  quotes from Bill W, Jr. with a smile on your face, knowing that this may be the day your taste buds will be introduced to a noodle ring, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.  You need only contact me for details.
       1.  International Mountain Day—created by the UN in 2003 to encourage and promote sustainable mountain development and in a more footloose and fancy free observance relates to the practice started far earlier of college students to en mass skip class and head to the surrounding hills and mountains.
         2. National Noodle Ring Day—celebrating a way to break free of spaghetti and other boring forms of pasta with a pasta ring form from an and eight to nine inch mold.
        3. National Live Longer Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1843 of  Nobel Prize winner robert Koch, founding father of microbiology who is known for identifying the specific causative agents of tuberculosis, cholera, and anthrax, noted shorteners of life expectancy of the 19th Century. He received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1905.
        4. 1974 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1974 Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas.
On this day in
      a. 1934 Bill W, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, took his last drink and entered treatment for the last time.
      b. 1941 in one of the classic blunders of all time which would insure total defeat, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States because Japan which did not attack the Soviet Union in December of 1941 which would have prevented Stalin from transferring his troops from Siberia to defeat the Germans at the gates of Moscow bombed Pearl Harbor 4 days earlier.
      c. 1946 the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was founded.
      d. 2008 Bernard Madoff was arrested for engineering the largest Ponzi scheme in history 50 billion dollars—sadly proving that greed of high returns trumps investor rational thinking too many times.
Reflections on life by Bill W: "Learning how to live in the greatest peace, partnership, and brotherhood with all men and women, of whatever description, is a moving and fascinating adventure. "
"We have good reason to disbelieve those who think spirituality is the way of weakness."
"Honesty with ourselves& others gets us sober, but it is tolerance that keeps us that way."
