Ridley's Believe It Or Not—December 10, 2014: Trust your Hump Day is going well one and that you are bracing for another round of Christmas parties. As always I hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and a quote from Fred Hampton, Jr. with a smile on your face, knowing that if you celebrate one of the holidays with lager it will be responsibly, blessed with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Animal Rights Day—started by Uncaged in 1998 to insure that animals are treated fairly and not the victims of inflicted pain by their owners; noble cause although an inherent conflict if one is a carnivore—almost like it is okay to drone terrorists and not get any intel from them but not do enhanced interrogation with a chance to get intel however suspect it might be.
2. Human Rights Day—a UN observance since 1950 with lofty and flowery proclamations and ideals which sadly in places like Rwanda, Cambodia, Bosnia, and Syria to name just a few on a very long list, have not been observed.
3. National Lager Day—another holiday best celebrated with a cool one in the heat of a spring day in the Southern Hemisphere such as Foster Lager or Stein Lager.
4. 1973 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song on this day in 1973 The Most Beautiful Girl by Charlie Rich.
5. “Good Night David” Day—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1911 of Chet Huntley, the co-anchor of the Huntley Brinkley News on NBC, who in an interview several days prior to retirement with Dick Cavett revealed he was conservative on fiscal issues and liberal on social ones (good balance) but unlike the current crop of too many newscasters especially the ones on MSNBC went to great lengths to make sure his views did not affect his reporting or interviews. His last “Good Night David” was on March 20, 1974 killed by lung cancer.
On this day in
a. 1901 the first Nobel Prizes were awarded.
b. 1906 sitting President Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War as later did President Woodrow Wilson for creating the League of Nations to try to prevent future wars while President Obama received the same award in 2009 for accomplishments that barely seem to stand out in the advance of peace.c. 1907 in the worst day of the Brown Dog Riots in London 1,000 medical students clash with 400 police over a memorial to animals that have been vivisected for medical research.
d. 1976 the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environment Modification Techniques, which is a typical UN long winded way of saying weather warfare.
Reflections on human rights and how to address violations: “We've got to face the fact that some people say you fight fire best with fire, but we say you put fire out best with water. We say you don't fight racism with racism. We're gonna fight racism with solidarity.” Fred Hampton, Jr. a member of the Black Panther Party, executed in his sleep by the Chicago Police Department. The achievements of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela are but a few examples of the wisdom of that statement while the protestors in Ferguson or the rioters during the Los Angeles Riot burning down buildings and looting businesses are definitely not.
