October 10, 2020 Ridley's Believe It Or Not World Day Against the Death Penalty.

Ridley's Believe It Or Not October 10, 2020
CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues with 500,203 new cases (a 1.35%  increase compared to a .60% increase yesterday) to bring the total over 37 million to 37,312,551, 8,225,345  of  which  are active, 29,087,206 of which have been closed with 28,011,849 recoveries (96.30% compared to  yesterday’s 96.29%) and 1,075,357 deaths (3.701% compared to yesterday’s 3.71%) to continue the trend of increased recovery percentages and decreased mortality percentages.

CV USA Cases: New cases of 90,163 with total cases nearing 8 million at 7,919,417 (a 2.24% increase compared to yesterday’s 1.16% increase) with 2,628,828 active cases f which 14,781, recently on an upward trend with slight blips from a high of 19,155 on July 23  (14,653 yesterday and 15,881 on September 1), are in serious or critical condition as trend continues to go down, and 5,290,589 closures, 218,936 of which have been deaths (4.14% compared to yesterday’s 4.15%) and 5,071,553 of which have been recoveries (95.86% compared to yesterday’s 95.85%) (our death rate percentages continue to improve and are finally in single digits since Cuomo repealed on May 10 his order sending CV positive patients to nursing homes and ADL facilities and on a deaths per million population measurement at 660 ranks behind Peru (1002), Belgium (875), Bolivia (705), Brazil (704), Spain (704), Chile (693), and Ecuador (688),  and only slightly worse than Mexico (646), UK (628), Italy (598), and Sweden (583) that never closed its economy down like we did and we have now conducted 116,973,060 tests (now at 352,821/M compared to Russia at 344,670/M so Trump is telling truth that we conduct more tests in number and on a per capital basis for nations (but excluding nations with small populations like Denmark,  Israel and Singapore) but for the U.K. at 396,966/M).

Non CV Case News: In the Biden Corollary to the Ginsburg Rule that said SCOTUS nominees would not indicate how they would rule on pending cases, Biden has the audacity to proclaim voters don’t deserve to know his stance on packing the court (anyone who believes he and Harris are not committed to make the court an arm of the Blues must believe in the tooth fairy); Newsom coping with a state in severe financial distress but a state that outlawed slavery for its admission is pushing ahead on a path for black reparations which ironically does not include the Chinese who died like flies building the Transcontinental Railroad through the mountains of California; Scully is claiming his Trump biased tweet was hacked and some would think that would be easy to prove or disprove and to restore any sense of objectivity which is lacking form the MSM good idea to have that done: Hurricane Delta unlike the woman in “Delta Dawn” did not linger in Louisiana but passed quickly through leaving almost a million without power and massive rainfall that caused significant flooding; Chris Christie who because of his weight was at risk, has recovered from CV and been released from the hospital; on the 1st Amendment wars front a DC judge has issued a TRO to prevent the District of Columbia from banning outdoor religious services by Capitol Hills Baptist Church while the city was encouraging massive protests with Mayor Bowser participating (win one for the anti-hypocrites);  Pocahontas must believe this nation is a Banana Republic as she pledges Trump will be held accountable for CV pandemic deaths, climate change views and alleged comments on men and women who served in Vietnam (does that mean Pocahontas that we put him in jail or on a gurney?); Trump has just picked up his 4th Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

Chicago/Baltimore Gun Violence: In Chicago as of October 9,  2020, the number of shootings increased to 3,324 of whom 568 have died (total travesty of BLM when blacks are shot and killed by blacks in droves and only sounds of silence and complete absence of any protests in front of City Hall demanding action to curb the killings and shootings); Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population and hoping against all hopes that 2020 will not be a record in terms of deaths but now seems to be shooting less and killing less and is now 307 behind Chicago at 261 murders (when will Chicago and Baltimore get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color and when will the left focus on the problem of color on color shootings in Blue run cities which  have  been way  more  deadly and way more numerous than shootings by  police or by random mass shootings which occur much less.
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, factoids of interest for this  day in history, a musical link to “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince and the Revolution,  the fact that you are pododromhydrosis  free and  a quote by the Richard LaGravenese on capital punishment,

1.  World Day Against the Death Penalty—created by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty to move to ban the death penalty which at least has almost been de facto abolished in places like California which has not executed a prisoner since 2006 and has 724 prisoners on its death row which belies the belief that the penalty is a deterrent to murder but enhances the belief that it is a very expensive proposition with legal appeals to keep a prisoner on death row when life without possibility of parole would be far cheaper and probably much more punishing.

          2.  World Mental Health Day—created by WHO in 1996 to promote advances in and treatment for mental health issues.

           3. 1984 Number One Song— the number 1 song in 1984 on a run of 2 weeks was “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince and the Revolution in the second of 2  number 1 songs with 14 other acts achieving their first number 1 song. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCM2dEWGf-o. Prince founded in 1979 the band which disbanded in 1986. This incredible musical talent and singer and songwriter of some 500-1000 songs died way too soon on April 21, 2016 at age 57 after ingesting counterfeit Vicotin which contained fentanyl.

         4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “pododromhydrosis” which means smelly feet a condition one would always like to avoid especially in a crowded room.

         5. Leave the Wine Behind—celebrating or bemoaning depending on your political orientation the birth on this day in 1967 of California Governor Gavin Newsom who before he went into politics went into the wine business where he still has interest but managed to rise above concerns over his alcohol consumption which given the complete failure of his Economic Development Office should cause most politicians to pick up the bottle.

         On this day in:

         a. 1933 in what was the first case of a plane destroyed by sabotage in flights, a Boeing 247 after taking off for Oakland had a bomb  go off in the toilet, crashing the plane and killing all 4 passengers and 3 crew aboard; the perpetrator has never been found.

          b. 1938 as a result of the Munich Agreement that was supposed to bring “Peace in Our Time,” Czechoslovakia withdrew from the Sudetenland followed by the start of WWII less than 11 months later.

         c. 1964 the Tokyo Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony was the first to be seen live on television.

      d. 1973 Spiro Agnew resigned as Vice President due to tax evasion for which he ultimately pled nolo contendere with no jail time.

         e. 2018 Hurricane Michael rowed the winds ashore to make landfall in Florida as a Cat 5 Hurricane bringing the U.S. 57 deaths 45 of whom were in Florida and an estimated $25.1 billion in damages.
Reflections on the death penalty: “The death penalty issue is obviously a divisive one. But whether one is for or against, you can not deny the basic illogic - if we know the system is flawed, if we know there are innocent people on Death Row, then until the system is reformed, should we not abandon the death penalty to protect those who are innocent?” Richard LaGravenese, noted American screenwriter and director.
