Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For June 9, 2016 Finally only 225 more days to endure President Obama’s pathetic lame duck term which HRC wants to extend another four years. On the political theater front Sanders met with President Obama today and came out of the meeting defiantly remaining in the last Blue primary D.C. and vowing to go to the convention in Philadelphia to advance the cause of his “movement;” Hillary made a complete fool of herself on an interview with Fox trying to explain what she would do to revive a pathetic economy; Kasich like many of the “establishment” Reds will be going to the Blue convention without endorsing Trump; the rabid ideologue Debbie Wasserman Schulz, head of the DNC, may be thrown under the bus to get Sanders on board and what has to be the epitome of journalistic bias and lack of responsibility, Jesse Benn a writer for the leftist rag Huntington Post is advocating violence at Trump rallies as a logical response to forestall his election. On the noncampaign front, the recall outrage grows and is gaining momentum over the judge who sentenced a Stanford swimmer to only six months in jail for raping his date behind a dumpster on the Stanford campus---sad day for my alma mater.
As always I trust your Thursday is off to a great start and that you will enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Simon and Garfunkel, factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Michael J. Fox, while looking forward to enjoying a slice of strawberry-rhubarb pie, blessed with a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that, if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like FATHERS’ DAY, GRADUATIONS, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. World APS Day—creating awareness for a rare autoimmune disease Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome in which the body attacks its own blood cells creating thrombosis. If you see someone wearing a purple ribbon today it is not because they want Reds and Blues to cross the aisle but rather to create awareness for this disease.
2. Donald Duck Day—another whimsical observance celebrating the appearance of that iconic Disney cartoon character Donald Duck who first starred in 1034 in the cartoon “The Wise Little Hen” and who is still a great hit today at the Disney Resorts and Theme Parks.
3. 1967 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1967 on a run of three weeks in that position “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkel. Here’s a link to Simon and Garfunkel performing the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C1BCAgu2I8
4. National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day—celebrating a great way to dispose of your unwanted rhubarb; here is a killer recipe if you cannot find this pie at a nearby Marie Callender’s : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C1BCAgu2I8.
5. Back to the Future-- celebrating the birthday on this day in 1991 of Michael J. Fox, a Canadian born actor who first appeared in the TV series Family Ties and starred in the Back to the Future movies and who has struggled with Parkinson’s disease (the same disease that killed Ali who is being buried today) since 1999.
On this day in:
a. 68 probably stung by the bad reviews of his fiddle playing while Rome was burning committed suicide leading to civil war in Rome of the Year of the Four Emperors.
b. 1650 the Harvard Corporation, the administrative body overseeing Harvard, was founded. It was the first legal corporation formed in the colonies.
c. 1954 during Senate hearings chaired by Senator Joseph McCarthy on the issue of whether the Communist Party had infiltrated the U.S. Army, Joseph Welch, counsel to the Army rebuked Senator McCarthy with the following: "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?" McCarthy was discredited, censured by the Senate in December and died three years later of hepatitis, probably aggravated by his suspected alcoholism.
d. 1978 the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) in a better late than never moment opened its priesthood to “all worthy men” thereby ending the ban on African-American priests.
e. 1985 Thomas Sutherland, the dean of Agriculture for American University in Beruit, was captured pursuant to directives from Iran and held hostage for six years. Fortunately he sued the rogue government of Iran and received over $35,000,000—why we were dumb enough to release billions to this rogue nation is and will always remain a monument to Obama’s stupidity in the region.
Reflections on the need for humor even in the worst of adversity: “I think the scariest person in the world is the person with no sense of humor.” Michael J. Fox How true, how very true.
