On this day in:

c. 1962 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the apartheid policies of South Africa and called upon all members to terminate economic and military relations with South Africa. 32 years later proving that like men, no nation, other than perhaps the rogue nation of North Korea, can be an island in and to itself, apartheid came to an end.
d. 1965 the United States and Cuba sign an agreement whereby any Cubans who wish to emigrate to the United States will be airlifted there. Hindsight predictions on why apartheid would fail: “I've never doubted that apartheid - because it was of itself fundamentally, intrinsically evil - was going to bite the dust eventually.” Reverend Desmond Tutu, long time South African critic of apartheid and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in ending apartheid.
