5. Age is a Myth Day—celebrating the birthday of a person on this day in 1940 who seems truly ageless in terms of looks and movements—Chuck Norris.
On this day in
a. 1804 in St. Louis a formal ceremony was held for the transfer of the Louisiana Territory from France to the U.S.; other than the Alaska purchase from Russia, the best land deal we ever made.
b. 1831 the French Foreign Legion was established by King Lois Philippe to support his war in Algeria.
c. 1849 Abraham Lincoln applied for a U.S. Patent to lift boats over shoals and obstructions; he was the only U.S. President to have applied for a patent.
d. 1896 after Bob Fitzsimmons knocked out the much larger Jim Corbett to win the heavyweight crown, he coined the immortal phrase, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”
e. 1933 Long Beach was hit with a devastating earthquake which killed over a 100 people and led to major improvements in building codes in California.
