Ridley's Believe It Or Not--This Day In History- January 20, 2014

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--January 20, 2014:  Since all good things come in threes here are three holidays to celebrate today:
             1.
Martin Luther King Day--first celebrated as a federal holiday, thanks to President Ronald Reagan, in 1986.
             2. MLK National Day of Service-- only federal national day of service urging Americans to celebrate MLK Day with community service instead of just taking the day off. Go to  http://mlkday.gov/serve/find.php  to find a project in your community—great way to help bring us together and show Washington we can even though they cannot.
             3. Camcorder Day honoring those big bulky video recorders (mostly replaced by cell phones today) introduced on this day in 1982--made everyone a star and e.g. Rodney King arrest, made everyone accountable.
On this day in:
             a.  1920 the American Civil Liberties Union was founded.
             b.  1929 the first full length movie with sound filmed outdoors On Old Arizona was produced.
             c.  1970 the Super Fight, a fictional computer driven fight between  long retired Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali took place with Rocky Marciano according to the computer knocking out Ali in the 13th round, only to die in a plane crash shortly thereafter weeks later.
To be an ace you need 5 great quotes, compliments of Martin Luther King, Jr.:
            1. "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'"
            2. "Our life begins to end the day we beome silent about things that matter."
            3. "The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict."
            4. "the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
            5. "In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
Hope your favorite team won and you are able to withstand the next two weeks of media overkill before the Super Bowl. Please enjoy the 140 character poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and join 135 growing followers) and follow my blogs. Always good, incisive and entertaining poems on my blogs--click on links below. www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com for an original poem to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and an original in poem honoring a 17 year young Progeria victim who died on the eve of becoming an honorary captain for the Patriots  (have tissues handy). Just posted for your enjoyment on www.alaskanpoetcommentary.blogspot.com poems on the PA AG's office investigating a massive cheating scandal at Philadelphia’s public schools--not students but their teachers and principals; hanging up of a 911 dispatcher on a call from a son coming home to find a dead mother; and new diseases and conditions added by the Surgeon General to the list of medical problems caused by smoking, including one, if you are a noncelibate male, that will really, really make you want to read it and stop. Still in the works is a  comment on the Imperial Presidency’s power grabs.
