Ridley's Believe It Or Not--This Day In History--January 11, 2014

Ridley's Believe It Or Not--January 11, 2014:  Slow day and week (and I mean another day of  scrambling to find holidays of note) for holidays but pulled these rabbbits out of the hat to celebrate:
             1.
Write Your Name In Morse Code Day: .- .-.. .- ... -.- .- -. .--. --- . - .-. .... -.-- -- . ... for my

handle. Link for you to amaze friends: http://moresecode.scphillips.com/jtranslator.html

             2. Cigarettes Are Hazardous To Your Health Day--If you do not need another reason to

                  quit.

             3. Toss Fruitcake Day--Will never replace Curling as a Winter Olympics sport!

On this day in:

             a.  1949 the first recorded case of snowall in Los Angeles.

             b.  1964 the Surgeon General Luther Terry released a comprehensive report indicating that

smoking may be hazardous to one's health leading to a decline in smoking rates and by

credited with saving 8 million American lives since its release (sadly 42 million are not able

to break the habit and  over 400 thousand die each year).

             c.   1989 140 nations agreed to ban the use of chemcial weapons.

When you consider the survivors and the second hand smoke, Kurt may have been wrong: "The public health authorities never mention the main reason many Americans have for smoking heavily, which is that smoking is a fairly sure, fairly honorable form of suicide."  Kurt Vonnegut, noted American author--Slaughter House Five   Hope this is a day for you and loved ones you know to quit.

Kudos to all the interesting consumer electronic products we will be hard pressed to afford or understand and use all the functions on display the Internation CES happening this week in Las Vegas.
