Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For December 8, 2018 Despite the assertions by the anti-Trump MSM the sentencing recommendations filed by Mueller’s band of pro Clinton donors provide no evidence of collusion with Russia (how long does this witch-hunt go on with its flagrant expenditure of funds and when does the nation come to the conclusion that the purpose of the investigation is only to weaken the administration and frustrate the implementation of policies that got Trump elected; 28 year old Ramsey Bearce has been arrested in West Virginia for sending obscene photos to a 15 year old former student (women should have the right like men to pursue winter to summer relationships but given the age of the male this is outrageous); “Spartacus” Booker is heading to New Hampshire fueling speculation that he will join the crowded field of candidate and run for president in 2020; Alyssa Zabraski was arrested for shoplifting at a Wal-Mart in Boardman Township, Ohio but her mug shot photo has gone viral
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you are not cursed with nyctalopia and a relevant quote from Elon Musk on space travel, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. International Shareware Day—commemorating the efforts of thousands of programmers who are creating apps or programs that are free in the expectation usually not fulfilled that the users impressed by the program will pay for an upgrade.
2. National Christmas Tree Day—celebrating since 2015 the sale of Christmas trees during the Christmas season consisting last year of 48.5 million trees, 27.4 million of which were real and the balance artificial. 3. 1970 Number One Song— the number one song in 1970 on a run of 2 weeks in that position was “Tears of a Clown” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4heHLbchPKk
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day as we moved from words beginning with “m” to words beginning with “n” is “nyctalopia” which means night blindness which sadly affects most of us fortunate to reach senior status.
5. Speaks Her Mind as the Don Rickles of Political Commentary--celebrating the birth on this day in 1961 of Ann Coulter noted conservative author, speaker and commentator who after ceasing practicing law started her broadcasting career at of all places the mostly slanted news MSNBC where she was fired twice for on air insults.
On this day in:
a. 1927 the Brookings Institution, one of the oldest think tanks in the nation, was formed by the merger of three institutions founded by Robert Brookings.
b. 1980 former Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment in New York City by Mark Chapman who was arrested at the scene of the crime reading Catcher in the Rye, tried, convicted and sentenced to life, denied parole at 10 parole hearings and eligible for the next hearing in 2020.
c. 1987 the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was signed in Washington, D.C. by President Reagan and Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev; due to suspected Russian cheating and Chinese build up of forces in the Pacific, the U.S. announced its intention in October of this year to withdraw from the treaty.
d. 2010 with the second launch of SpaceX Falcon and the first launch of SpaceX Dragon, SpaceX became the first private company to launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft.
e. 2013 Metallica performed a concert appropriately titled “Freeze Em All” in Antarctica, thereby becoming the first band to perform on all seven continents.
Reflections on the future of space travel from Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX: “The launch rate is increasing exponentially. Particularly when you take tanking or refilling on orbit into account, and taking the idea of establishing a self-sustaining base on Mars or the moon or elsewhere seriously, you need ultimately thousands of ships and tens of thousands of retanking or refilling operations, which means you need many launches per day. In terms of how many landings are occurring, you need to be looking at your watch, not your calendar.”
