September 19 History Talk Like A Pirate Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 19. 2014Trust your Friday is proving to be a good one and a great jumping board to the weekend and that you enjoy the holidays and factoids and quote from Teddy Roosevelt with a smile on your sunscreened face, with an a butterscotch pudding awaiting you for dessert, blessed with a positive attitude, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient.
          1. International Talk Like A Pirate Day—great day to grab your parrot and eye patch but in the concern over terrorists leave your sword at home.
          2. National POW/MIA  Day---honoring those warriors who are still not accounted for from the conflicts we have fought in the past and will fight in the future to protect our freedoms.
          3. Handicap Is A Myth Day—celebrating the birthday and career  of Jim Abbott, who was born on this day in 1967 with only one hand, but spent 11 years in the Major Leagues and pitched a no hitter against the Yankees on September 4, 1993.
          4. Weight Is A State Of Mind Day—celebrating the birthdays of two ends of the diet spectrum-Mama Cass on this day in 1941(died of a heart attack in 1974) and British model Leslie (Twiggy) Lawson on this day in 1969 (still alive today). In terms of longevity, skinny is obviously better.
          5. National Butterscotch Pudding Day—assuming you survive the rat race for another day, a great way to end it.
On this day in
             a. 1778 the Continental Congress passed the first federal budget, which even with over 200 years of inflation was dwarfed by the bloated and wasteful budget we have today.
             b. 1959 Nikita Khrushchev was barred from visiting Disneyland due to security concerns.
             c. 1982 Scott Fahlman posted the first emoticon on a website J.
             d. 2014 the citizens of Scotland voted to remain in the United Kingdom. http://alaskanpoet.blogspot.com/2014/09/scotland-votes-on-independence-freedom.html
Not sure if Teddy Roosevelt ever played baseball but he would have been a great fan of Jim Abbott: “The boy who is going to make a great man must not make up his mind merely to overcome a thousand obstacles, but to win in spite of a thousand repulses and defeats.”  Teddy Roosevelt 26th President of the United States
