September 12 History National Video Games Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—September 12, 2014Trust your Friday is proving to be a good one and that you have time to reflect after seeing all the flags at half mast on what transpired yesterday 13 years ago and that you enjoy the holidays and factoids and quote from Sally Ride with a chocolate milkshake in hand,  a smile on your sunscreened face, a positive attitude,  secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem tailored to the event and the recipient.
I have posted on my blog a poem on 911 day and Mike Kehoe’s bravery.—I think you will enjoy it.
           1. National Day of Encouragement Day—honoring since 2007 the basic concept that if you want the youth of the country to excel encouragement is a far better tool than scolding or demeaning—no one can succeed easily if they are not encouraged to take a worthwhile risk but will not be disgraced if they might fail in the endeavor.
           2. National Policewomen’s Day—commemorating the hiring of the first female police officer, Alice Wells on this day in 1910 in the City of Angels; Ray Price notwithstanding most American males are reluctant to attack a woman and especially one with a badge who is probably better attuned at diffusing violent situations.
          3. National Video Games Day—celebrating or bemoaning the incredible advancement of video games in the world since the introduction of a game that today looks like it was a reject from the Dark Ages-Pong.
          4. Stand Up to Cancer Day—promoting awareness of the causes of cancer like smoking and energizing funding of cancer research.
5 Chocolate Milkshake Day—celebrating another great summer drink that still works most of the other days of the year.
On this day in
             a. 490 B.C.  the Greeks soundly defeated the precursor to Iran, Persia, at the battle of Marathon and creating what many now believe is a legend not facts of Pheidippides running some 26 miles  from Marathon to Athens without the benefits of Nikes or Gatorade to announce the victory only then to collapse and die.
             b. 1958 Jack Kilby demonstrated one of the building blocks of the future electronic and computer revolution the integrated circuit.
             c. 1992 NASA launched the Endeavor on the 50th Shuttle mission, rocketing into space Marie Carol Jemison, the first African American woman to go into space, Mamoru Mori, the first Japanese citizen to go into space on an American spacecraft and although probably not on a honeymoon—Mark Lee and Jan Davis, the first married couple to go into space (later divorced).
Ride Sally Ride, reflections on being a woman in space from the first and a Stanford grad “I wasn't really scared. I was very excited, and I was very anxious. When you're getting ready to launch into space, you're sitting on a big explosion waiting to happen.” Sally Ride, first American woman into space and her prediction proved so correct with the Challenger disaster.
