June 19 History National Martini Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 19, 2014:  Time to saunter and smell the roses and enjoy the holidays, factoids and quote by of all people former President Gerald Ford on martinis.
            1. National Martini Day—promoting that shaken not stirred experience that even with the demise of expense accounts and the three martini lunch still lives on.
            2. World Sickle Cell Day—promoting awareness of a disease that affects one out of five hundred Afro-Americans.
           3. National Sauntering Day—celebrating since 1979 the need to slow down and saunter as opposed to a 24/7 sprint or jog through life—smell the roses!
          4. Juneteenth Day—celebrating and honoring the Emancipation of slaves in Texas on this day in 1865 in Texas and now observed in Texas and 42 other states.
On this day in:
            a. 1910 the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington.
            b. 1964 after an 83 day filibuster, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by the Senate—what took us so long to start to end the stigma of racial discrimination?
            c. 1978 in a tribute to cat lovers everywhere, Garfield, the most widely syndicated comic strip of all times, made its debut.
Ford’s view on efficiency: "The three martini lunch is the epitome of American efficiency. Where else can you get an earful, a bellyful and a snootful at the same time?" Gerald Ford Not sure on this one, especially on the ability of the person consuming to remember the earful.
