June 10 History --Iced Tea Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 10, 2014:  Meager day for holidays—enough to make one drown one’s frustrations in copious amounts of iced tea. Hope  you enjoy the holidays, factoids, and quote.
            1. Alcoholics Anonymous Founders Day—celebrating the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous by Doctor Bob and Bill Wilson in Akron, Ohio on June 10, 1935 and the millions of alcoholics who have as a result managed to stay sober.
            2. Iced Tea Day—honoring the popularization of iced tea at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair—great drink on a hot day and if we are in climate change trend, suspect a lot more iced tea will be consumed although in a Catch-22 the more ice made the more carbon realized into the atmosphere.
            3. National Herb and Spice Day—honoring the herbs and spices without which our food would be bland and tasteless as could possibly be.
            4. National Call of the Wild Day---celebrating not Jack London but the birthday of Charles Burnett, aka the “Howlin’ Wolf,” one of the great jazz singers of of the 20th Century.
On this day in:
            a. 1854 the first class of midshipman graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.
            b. 1944 at the tender age of 15 Joe Nuxhall, the youngest ever player in the Major Leagues, pitched less than one inning giving up two hits and five runs and walking five batters.
            c. 1963 the Equal Pay Act was signed into law by President Kennedy in order to eliminate wage disparity based on sex—listening to Blues campaigning for election and reelection and you would think the law never existed.
A useful sailor’s prayer in times of adversity:  "God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.” Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet  and commander in chief of all Allied air, land and sea forces in the Pacific during World War II
