June 17 History Stewart's Root Beer Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—June 17, 2014:  Totally skunked on holidays again but at least able to create one. Hope you enjoy these meager few holidays, factoids and quote on the Watergate scandal.
            1. World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought Day—good to know that we in California in a major drought have the U.N. since 1995 behind us in support of our pain of drought.
            2. Eat Your Vegetables Day—given the increase in prices for meat and poultry, not a bad idea to celebrate that which is still affordable.
           3. Contract Day—celebrating the birthday of Newt Gingrich on this day in 1943 who in 1994 was the author of the Contract with America which led to the Republicans after four decades regaining control of the House of Representatives.
          4. Stewart’s Root Beer Day—celebrating the forming of Stewart’s Root Beer in 1924, mentioned today since my mother in Alaska in addition to great home brew and homemade wine also made copious amounts of root beer for the short summer months.
On this day in:
            a. 1885 the Statute of Liberty arrived in New York City.
            b. 1971 President Nixon declared a war of drugs, which we have obviously lost despite jailing thousands while the cartels have made billions.
            c. 1972 operatives for the Republican party were arrested in the Watergate break-in which would lead to the first resignation of a president in our history.
A forlorn hope perhaps given the “smidgeons” of corruption in the Obama White House: “ We are not going to have another Watergate in our lifetime. I am sure.” Robert Woodward, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist involved in exposing the Watergate scandal. Observing this administration’s complete lack of transparency sadly I fear Mr. Woodward is dead wrong on his prediction.
