Ridley's Believe It Or Not--January 14, 2014:  Good day for holidays to celebrate:              1. Ratification Day---Ratification of the Treaty of Paris in 1784 ending the Revolutionary War and establishing the United States as a sovereign nation.             2. National Poetry at Work Day--Great day to craft a poem and  impress boss and fellow workers as to your creativity and why you should get a raise.               3. International Kite Day--What to tell your boss (behind his back of course) and your co-workers  to fly if they do not like your creative efforts.                                                                      On this day in:              a.  1963 George Wallace was sworn in as the governor of Alabama, promising "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segreation forever." Fortunately "forever" did not last very long.              b.  1973 Elvis Presley, wearing sandals and not blue suede shoes, aired his live TV concert Aloha Hawaii by satellite which was viewed by a record number of viewers for a concert by a single entertainer.              c.  1981  President Jimmy Carter proposed that Martin Luther King's birthday become a national holdiday.           One cannot work in a nation that does not flourish:  “Poetry fettered, fetters the human race. Nations are destroyed or flourish in proportion as their poetry, painting, and music are destroyed or flourish." William Blake, 18th and 19th Century English poet and painter, considered one of the seminal figures in the history of poetry and the visual arts of the Romantic Age. Ridley's Believe It Or Not--January 13, 2014:  Slow day and week (and I mean another day of  scrambling to find holidays of note) for holidays but pulled these rabbits out of the hat to celebrate:              1. Stephen Foster Day---The father of American Music who died on this day in 1864, less than a  hundred years before the Music Died again (Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper).              2. Korean American Day--significant contributions far beyond kimchi.                                        3. International Skeptics Day and its counterweight Make Your Dreams Come True Day.  Celebrate the former in listening to politicians and the latter when dealing with yourself. A dream does not have in many cases a long life span and it is a terrible thing to waste. On this day in:              a.  1785 John Walter published the first edition of the London Times.              b.  1906 The first advertisement for a radio appeared in Scientific American costing $7.50    (about $190 today) with a claimed receiving radius of one mile (tough to be an early adapter in 1906).              c.  1957 To the joy of future college students and dogs, Wham-O produced the first Frisbee.           Do not, repeat do not let this happen to you!  “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Bedford Day---Read below to see what you have missed in the past.              2. National Pharmacist Day--Wonder if online spammers venerated on this day?               3. National Youth Day in India- With 363 million under 15 (larger than population of U.S.) On this day in:              a.  1967 Dr. James Bedford (the reason for Bedford Day) became the first person to be cyronically preserved to await  resuscitation due to medical advances (still waiting in frozen purgatory).              b.  1998 19 European nations agreed to ban human cloning--no more dreams of immortality  save in the legacy of one's acts and the acts of one's issue.              c.   2013 in a testament to the collateral damage of progress, Beiging's air pollution declared to be hazardous to human health. One of the next ethical issues facing us mere mortals as stem cells offer great therapeutic progress in treating disease and damage to the human body: "The cloning of human beings is on most of  lists of things to worry about  from Science, along with genetic engineering, behavior control, transplanted heads, computer poetry, and the unrestrained growth of plastic  flowers." Lewis Thomas, noted 20th Century biologist and writer.              a.  1949 the first recorded case of snowall in Los Angeles.

             b.  1964 the Surgeon General Luther Terry released a comprehensive report indicating that

                   smoking may be hazardous to one's health leading to a decline in smoking rates and by

                   credited with saving 8 million American lives since its release (sadly 42 million are not able

                   to break the habit and  over 400 thousand die each year).

             c.   1989 140 nations agreed to ban the use of chemcial weapons.

When you consider the survivors and the second hand smoke, Kurt may have been wrong: "The public health authorities never mention the main reason many Americans have for smoking heavily, which is that smoking is a fairly sure, fairly honorable form of suicide."  Kurt Vonnegut, noted American author--Slaughter House Five   Hope this is a day for you and loved ones you know to quit.

             1. League of Nations Day--U.S. did not join and it collapsed.

             2. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day--tough to do in below zero temps.

             3. Universal Letter Writing Week 1/8-1/14-- Lost art sadly.

             a.  1920 the League of Nations was established after the War to End All Wars.

             c.   1951 the permanent headquarters of the U.N. was established in New York City.
When do we celebrate, if ever, Energy Production Day? "Conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy. Dick Cheny. I think North Dakota which is leading the fracking charge for expandied energy production and almost zero unemployment would support such a new holiday.

National Lose Weight/ Feel Great Week 1/5-1/12 shed those holiday pounds.              2. Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration Week 1/8-1/11: Off to Vegas for CES and Elvis                  impersonators while wearing your blue suede shoes.                                                                                     3. International 3-D Week 1/7-1/10: Go see Gravity today or tomorrow. On this day in:              a. 1987 China and Vietnam engaged in border skirmishes killing over 1,500                      and discrediting the domino theory that put over 58,000 American                   men and women's names on the Wall in D.C.              b. 2001 Apple announced iTunes as the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco.               c.  2007 Apple introduced the iPhone. Oracles at Delphi were better predictors of success that some market gurus in a rapidly changing   technological world: "Sales for the phone will skyrocket initially. However, things will calm down, and the Apple phone will take its place on the shelves with the random video cameras, cellphones, wireless routers and other would-be hits.......and it will largely fail." --Michael Kanellos, analyist in Silicon Valley and editor at CNET. Ridley's Believe It Or Not--January 8, 2014:  Slow day for holidays unless you are in, put down your cocktail and listen Dennis Rodman, North Korea and celebrating Kim Yong Un's Birthday and scraped from the bottom of the holiday barrel Bubble Bath Day--may have lost my marbles from Old Rock Day yesterday but nothing beats a bubble bath while reading a Nook; and on this day in 1964  LBJ declared a War on Poverty (history will record we lost after trillions spent); in 2002 President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Law; and in 2011 Jared Loughner in Arizona killed 6 people and wounded 13 others, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Gifford who was shot in the head but survived in a miracle.             Obama,  why we need a war on income inequality like a hole in the head: "The fact that war is the word we use for almost everything—on terrorism, drugs, even poverty—has certainly helped to desensitize us to its invocation; if we wage wars on everything, how bad can they be?” Glenn Greenwald, A Tragic Legacy: How a Good vs. Evil Mentality Destroyed the Bush Presidency. Almost like all the violence in video games or movies which must desensitize our moral perceptions of what is right and wrong.             Kudos to Seminoles last Monday night and condolences to an underdog Auburn team that played their hearts out, only to lose in the last few seconds. Kudos also to the voters who voted for Winston as this year's Heisman.
