Ridley's Believe It Or Not December 9, 2020
CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues with 638,865 new cases (a .93% increase compared to a .98% increase yesterday) to bring the total over 69 million to 69,147,796, 19,691,388 of which are active, 49,426,408 of which have been closed with 47,853,504 recoveries (96.82% compared to yesterday’s 96.81%) and 1,572,904 deaths (3.18% compared to yesterday’s 3.19%) to continue the trend of increased recovery percentages and decreased death percentages.
CV USA Cases: New cases 213,587 (a 1.37% increase compared to yesterday’s 1.57% increase) to bring the total over 15 million to 15,751,928 with 6,275,949 active cases of which 27,014 (.43% of active cases), recently on a disturbing upward trend with slight blips from a high of 19,155 on July 23 (26,546 yesterday which means sadly the peak has not been reached and 15,881 on September 1), are in serious or critical condition as trend has shifted and is still continuing to go up, and 9,475,979 closures, 295,543 of which have been deaths (3.12% compared to yesterday’s 3.13%) and 9,180,436 of which have been recoveries (96.86% compared to yesterday’s 96.87%). Our death rate percentage continues to improve and is finally in single digits since Cuomo repealed on May 10 his order sending CV positive patients to nursing homes and ADL facilities and after many months is now .06% lower than the world rate and on a deaths per million population measurement on a steady climb to 891 ranks behind Belgium (1508), Peru (1097), Italy (1022), Spain (1005), and UK (920 which has now passed us despite leading world in testing), and Argentina (882) and only slightly worse than France (867), Mexico (856), Brazil (839), Chile (818) that we recently passed, Ecuador (778), Bolivia (767) and Sweden (720) that never closed its economy down like we did but has recently been experiencing a rapid rise in deaths and we have now conducted 2,222,888 more tests to bring total to 213,415,488 (now at 642,185/M compared to Russia at 551,665/M so Trump was telling truth that we conduct more tests in number and on a per capital basis for nations (other than those nations that contain small populations like Bahrain, Denmark, Israel, Singapore and UAE) but for the U.K. which remains off the testing charts with tests at 681,103/M).
Non CV Case News: Michigan State Representative Cynthia Johnson has been stripped of her committee positions as a result of her responding to a slew of virulent social media racist attacks by posting a video warning Trumpers and telling them her soldiers know how to act (time to stop blowing the dog whistle of hate even as litigation contesting the election continues as it should); states are climbing on Texas’ suit before SCOTUS like ants at a picnic table seeking to set aside electoral votes of states that failed to follow their own constitutions in this election (I have to believe SCOTUS is less than pleased having to face this issue but if Biden is going to have the legitimacy he needs going forward for the over 74 million who voted for Trump SCOTUS is stuck with this political hot potato); Hunter Biden is apparently subject to grand jury investigation over possible criminal activity with his ties to China which has to be upsetting to Joe and to the millions of voters who might have not voted for a man who denied any knowledge of his son’s activities had this not been concealed until after the election (will be hard to believe the 10% for the Big Guy was not Joe Biden); SpaceX’s Starship which is to be the rocket to carry astronauts to Mars looked like a Vanguard on a déjà vu when it exploded a few feet above the ground but here the rocket had already gone into the stratosphere and was landing when it hit too fast enabling Musk to claim a success (Musk announced South Texas is the gateway to Mars and Texas should be drooling as Musk moves more operations out of high tax high regulations California); John Hopkins University has acknowledged its founder John Hopkins had owned 5 slaves before Maryland in 1864 outlawed the practice (hope the PC warriors will not be taking to streets demanding a change in name for the man whose hospital he founded in 1889 to also treat the indigent of Baltimore regardless of “age, sex or race”; Grace Coleman of Newport Beach has just been arrested after killing 2 parents and critically injuring their 3 small children in Newport Beach and then arrested for felony hit and run after trying to stagger away from the accident and in a sad commentary was out on probation awaiting trial for a prior DUI arrest in August of this year.
Chicago/Baltimore Gun Violence: In Chicago as of December 8, 2020, the number of shootings increased to nearing 4,000 at 3,997 of whom 682 have died (total travesty of BLM when blacks are shot and killed by blacks in droves and only sounds of silence and complete absence of any protests in front of City Hall demanding action to curb the killings and shootings); Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population and hoping against all hopes that 2020 will not be a record in terms of deaths but now seems to be shooting less and killing less and is now 372 behind Chicago at 310 murders (when will Chicago and Baltimore get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color and when will the left focus on the problem of color on color shootings in Blue run cities which have been way more deadly and way more numerous than shootings by police or by random mass shootings which occur far fewer times).

1. International Anti-Corruption Day—created by the United Nations in 2003 to promote awareness of the destruction and damage to economic and social development by corruption involved in the process and to promote means to prevent it and recover assets stolen by corruption. 2. International Veterinary Day—not sure who created this day or when but it is celebrated on the 9th of December to honor the contributions of veterinarians and their office personnel to the health and welfare of our pets who cannot tell us how they are feeling and sadly usually have shorter life expectancies.
3. 1954 Number One Song— the number 1 song in 1954 on this day on a run of 4 weeks was “Mr. Sandman” by the Chordettes to join 9 other number 1 songs. The Chordettes were founded in 1946 by Jinny Osborn and 3 of her friends in 1946 and was one of the longer lasting groups until it disbanded in 1961 upon Osborn’s departure from the band. Here’s a recording of them singing the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX45pYvxDiA
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “procatalepsis” which means anticipating and answering an opponent’s objections which is a great trait to have as debater or trial lawyer.
5. Changing Sides Too Late In Life--celebrating the birth on this day in 1932 of Sean Morton Downey better known to his fans as Morton Downey, Jr. who was a noted TV talk show host in the 80’s and who despite being a pro life activist was a heavy smoker who smoked during his show and blew smoke in his guests’ faces until being diagnosed with lung cancer in June of 1996 and had one lung removed. He then became a rabid anti smoking activist until he died of lung cancer and pneumonia on March 12, 2001 at age 68.
On this day in:
a. 1948 the Genocide Convention was unanimously adopted by the General Assembly in Paris on this day effective January 12, 1951; sadly as we have seen in such places as Cambodia and Rwanda the Convention has not been adhered to completely.
b. 1953 General Electric announced that all members of the Communist Party working there would be discharged.
c. 1979 the disease smallpox became the first of only two diseases to have been eradicated, the other Rinderplast or cattle plague in 2011.
d. 1996 in a what’s good for the goose is good for the gander type moment Gwen Jacob was acquitted of an indecent act of being topless in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
e. 2019 in New Zealand, White Island volcano erupted killing 22 people on tours visiting the active volcano and injuring some seriously 25 others.
Reflections on smoking by a former chain smoker: “I had spawned a generation of kids to think it was cool to smoke a cigarette. Kids walked up to me until a matter of weeks ago, they'd have a cigarette in their hand and they'd say, 'Hey, Mort,' or, 'Hey, Mouth, autograph my cigarette.' And I'd do it." Mort Downey, Jr. Wonder how many of those kids followed him into an early grave from lung cancer.
