April 23, 2020 Ridley's Believe It Or Not UN English Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For April 23, 2020 On the CV front validating that a one day drop does not a war win the number of new cases in the U.S. increased 122.47% from yesterday as Georgia with 1,740,000 CV cases opened bowling alleys, hair salons, barbershops, tattoo and massage parlors under criticism by many like Stacey Abrams that it was irresponsible (more and more states are inching forward to open certain businesses and even Gavin Newsom who always want to look good has reopened salons and barbershops); the CV pandemic across the planet continues with 78,304 new cases (32.62% increase in new cases) to bring the total to 2,710,089 cases, 1,776478 of which  are active, 933,610 of which have been closed with 743,510  recoveries ( 79.64%) and 190,100 deaths (20.37%); in the U.S. which has the dubious distinction of leading the world, new cases of 27,457 have brought total cases to 876,174  with 741,513  active cases and 134,661 closures, 49,651 of which have been deaths (36.87% up from yesterday’s 35.13% and 85,010  of which  have been recoveries ( 63.13% down from yesterdays 64.34%),  while total testing has ramped up to, 4,507,860,  an increase of 232.058   over yesterday; the House agreed to the massive stimulus bill which Trump will sign tonight; a random antibody testing of 3,000 New Yorkers, 70% of whom were located in the NYC Metropolitan Area showed a statewide infection rate of 13.9% or 2.7 million residents (which probably means that the CV is a lot less deadly and more like the flu than thought); in yet another example of TDS gone completely off the tracks, Michigan State Democrats plan to censure State Representative Karen Whitsett who met with Trump and other COVID-19 survivors and praised that hydroxychloroquine “saved her life;” (why are the Blues so full of hate and the need to depress any good news on Trump?);  Illinois has just extended its lock-down through May 31 with some relaxations like boating and fishing with social distance and animal grooming centers; California’s unemployment insurance department is under total meltdown not disbursing lawfully needed funds because of the millions applying and more importantly denying benefits if the reason for unemployment was given as corona virus (Newsom is proving to be inept and oblivious with his stay at home hectoring while the State is MIA in trying to solve the glitch problem); COVID-19 shows it ignores party lines by killing Elizabeth Warren’s brother and bringing Maxine Waters’ sister near death; as we may be tottering to frustration fueled violence and social order, a California judge has just tossed out backgrouind checks on ammunitions purchases; Chicago, as of April 22, 2020, 721 shootings of whom 136 have died but none today (so much for the effectiveness of Chicago’s stay at home order); Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population and hoping against all hopes that 2020 will not be a record in terms of deaths is now 51 behind Chicago with 85 murders (when will Chicago and Baltimore get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color and when will the left focus on the problem of color on color shootings in Blue run cities which have been more deadly and more numerous than random mass shootings?).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, factoids of interest for this day in history, a musical video link to Wilson Phillips, the fact that you are not using rhiontillexis, and a quote by Louis Brandeis on the English language, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like Father’s Day, college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. UN English Language Day—created by the UN in 2010 to promote multilingualism and equal use of the 6 official languages on the UN 1 of which is English.
2. International Nose Picking Day—not sure where or when this “observance” came from but in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic this is an “observance”  that definitely should not be practiced today.
3. 1991 Number One Song— the number 1 song in 1991 on this day on a run of 1 week in the position was “You’re in Love” by Wilson Phillips. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7gYii2unkg. This trio of 2 daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and 1 daughter of Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papa were blessed with their parent’s singing genes. After several hiatuses the group came back together in 2010 and is still performing today.
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day which is a quasi big word in honor of those who pick their nose is re observance is “rhinotillexis” which means nose picking and comes from the Greek “rhino” which means nose and “tillexis” which means the habit of picking at something.
5. Yo-yoing Is Only Lonelycelebrating the birth on this day in 1936 of superstar singer Roy Orbison with such classic hits as “Pretty Woman” and “Only the Lonely” who unfortunately was prone to massive overeating binges followed by fasting with up and down weight gains and shifts and died of a heart attack on December 6, 1988 at the too early age of 52
 On this day in:
 a. 1914 the Chicago Cubs played their first game at Wrigley Field then known as Weeghman Park.
 b. 1961 a failed putsch by French Generals against De Gaulle to prevent him from giving Algeria independence from France was started on this day only to collapse on April 26.
 c. 1968 students protesting the Vietnam War and the assassination of Martin Luther King occupied the Administration Building at Columbia University and shut the university down until forcibly removed by the NYPD on April 30, 1968.
 d. 2005 the first YouTube video “Me at the Zoo” was shown by founder Jawed Karim.
 e. 2018 Alek Minassian rented a truck and drove it into pedestrians on a sidewalk Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 16 before being arrested on site and his trial for multiple murders and assaults has been postponed due to the corona virus pandemic.
Reflections on the importance of the English language: “What is Americanization? It manifests itself, in a superficial way, when the immigrant adopts the clothes, the manners and the customs generally prevailing here. Far more important is the manifestation presented when he substitutes for his mother tongue the English language as the common medium of speech.” Louis Brandeis Justice of SCOTUS whose words here should be heeded more closely.
