December 6, 2018 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National Pawnbrokers Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For December 6, 2018 ABC aka the Always Biased Cack Network was slammed for joking about what Trump’s funeral would look like during Bush’s funeral; SCOTUS heard oral arguments on a double jeopardy case involving the question of whether an acquittal on a federal crime would preclude a trial on the same crime in a state court or vice versa (the ruling would have implications in the Mueller witch-hunt for Manafort should Trump chose as most believe he will pardon him); in one of the more poignant moments during Bush’s funeral Bob Dole confined to a wheel chair through pure grit and determination managed to rise and salute the casket; wild ride in the stock market as the Dow dropped 700 points to rise again to close at -79.40; Michael Avenatti who loves publicity has announced he has joined the Statue of Liberty protestor’s legal team; Senator Gillibrand is in the news by tweeting the future of the Democratic Party is female and intersectional (appealing to the progressive wing of the party); federal prosecutors have filed the first case arising out of the leak of the Panama Papers detailing tax avoidance schemes of numerous corporations and individuals arresting overseas three of the four defendants named; Comey will appear on Friday before a House Subcommittee to be grilled on the FBI’s handling of the Clinton e-mail probe in a closed session with the transcript to be released to the public within 24 hours; Pelosi is not budging on her refusal to fund the wall  in exchange for DACA deal (in lame duck session ram through wall funding in House and invoke nuclear option in Senate as option of shutting down government is not a good option); Emanuel’s announcement that he will not seek reelection has not curbed the gun violence as through December 5, 2018, 2792 people mostly of color have been shot by mostly people of color, of whom 473 have died (when will Chicago get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of mostly people of color by mostly people of color).
As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Diana Ross and the Supremes, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact that you are not going to nuncle someone today and a relevant quote from Erma Bombeck on cooking with a microwave oven, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. National Pawnbrokers Day—celebrating a form of business that originated in China some 3,000 years ago that provides a source of cash to borrowers with bad credit and a source of bargains for the merchandise pawned and not repaid and on the unsavory side a place for stolen goods to be fenced. December 6 was chosen as it coincides with St. Nicolas Day since the Saint was the Patron Saint of Pawnbrokers.
2. National Microwave Oven  Day—celebrating that ubiquitous appliance no kitchen should be which was discovered by accident when an engineer at Raytheon while working on radar improvements after the WWII noted the heating effects of the cavity magnetron when a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.
 3. 1968 Number One Song— the number one song in 1968 on a run of 2 weeks in that position was “Love Child” by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdmGO-GvHyo
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day as we moved from words beginning with “m” to words beginning with “n” is “nuncle” which means to defraud which politicians routinely do to the voters when trying of obtain their votes.
5. We Need More Love--celebrating the birth on this day in 1975 of Mia Love who became the first Republican African-American female to be elected to the House of Representatives in the 2014 elections; sadly she was defeated in the 2018 elections and received the rebuke of President Trump for not embracing him (leave it to the president to put his foot in his mouth).
    On this day in:
a. 1904 President Teddy Roosevelt announced his corollary to the Monroe Doctrine that the U.S. would intervene in the Western Hemisphere if Latin American governments proved incapable or unstable.
b. 1957 on live TV an attempt to launch our first satellite the Vanguard failed when the rocket rose 4 feet into the air and then exploded.
c. 1973 following confirmation by the Senate of Gerald Ford, the House of Representatives confirmed him 387-35 making him president following the resignation of Richard M. Nixon.
d. 2006 NASA released photos from the Mars Global Surveyor suggesting the presence of liquid water on the planet.
e. 2017 President Trump announced the formal recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Reflections on cooking with a microwave: “It is ludicrous to read the microwave direction on the boxes of food you buy, as each one will have a disclaimer: 'THIS WILL VARY WITH YOUR MICROWAVE.' Loosely translated, this means, 'You’re on your own, Bernice.'” Erma Bombeck, American humorist, columnist and author whose pen was taken away from her permanently on April 22, 1996
