Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For November 24, 2017 Retailers have
fingers crossed on Black Friday (the day that the cumulative losses suffered by
retailers during the course of the year have turned positive at the end of Black
Friday which started at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evening) as shoppers with bellies
full of turkey skipped the sofa and charged into the big box stores credit
cards ready; in another bloody reminder that Muslims are more likely than not
to be the victims of Radical Islam, jihadists attacked a mosque in Northeastern
Egypt, killing at least 235 worshippers during evening prayers; WaPo reporter Janelle
Ross secretly attended and spoke at a Democracy Alliance meeting in California
on how to get the alt-left’s economic narrative right and in so doing proved
what we have known all along that she along with most of her colleagues have
not an objective bone in their leftist bodies (the group is funded by
billionaire alt left supporter George Soros who at 87 hopefully will not be on
this planet much longer to sponsor his alt-left dribble that has driven
countries like Venezuela to the brink of chaos and bankruptcy); Seattle’s
income tax on the wealthy residents of Seattle has been struck down by a
Superior Court Judge but the city instead of seeing how it can reduce spending
will appeal (if successful watch the high earners voting with their feet and
moving out of Seattle); Kaepernick who reportedly has a book deal for a million
dollars led an Unthanksgiving day at Alcatraz (why he is not grateful for that
remains a mystery other than the fact his protest has nothing with racial
injustice but rather to impress his leftist Muslim girlfriend whose racist
tweet comparing the owner of the Ravens to a plantation owner sank discussion with
the Ravens on signing him); possible trouble for Trump on the Mueller witch-hunt
front as Flynn’s legal team has ceased cooperating with Trump’s legal team but
is now cooperating with Mueller; finally some great news that reveals the
charitable nature of the American people—a homeless Marine Corps vet with only $20
to his name gave it to a stranded women who had run out of gas (the woman and
her boyfriend created a Go Fund Me account with a goal of raising $10,000 to
help the vet and viewers responded with over $380,000 in contributions—kindness
does pay); almost a stuck record or a gruesome remake of Groundhog
Day, Chicago style, the carnage in Chicago continued unabated
with total shootings by mostly minorities against mostly minorities in
2017 through November 23 increasing to 3293 of whom 575 have died while
nothing is being done to hinder or prevent the killings of minorities by
minorities.
As always, I hope you enjoy
today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Taylor Swift, factoids of
interest for this day in history, hoping you do not suffer lancinations
over the drama in the Swamp, a relevant quote from Lois Kronenberger on the
lack of poetry, secure in the
knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like
birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can
provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the
event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Evolution
Day (International)—celebrating the publication on this day in 1859 of Darwin’s On Evolution
of the Species.
2. Black Friday—the term was
first used by the New York Times and
for retailers since 2005 the busiest day of the year with people camping out in
front of stores awaiting openings and often total pandemonium when the doors
open with shoppers racing through the aisles and sometimes fights breaking out
over sale items.
3. 2014 Number One Song—the number one
song in 2014 on a run of 7 weeks in that position was “Blank Space” by Taylor
Swift. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ORhEE9VVg
4. Word
of the Day—today’s word of the day is “lancination” which is a sharp
shooting pain which most conservatives feel when ever Nancy Pelosi takes the
stage.
5. Anatomy of a Successful Career—celebrating the birth on this day
in 1978 of Katherine Heigl, who started modeling at a very early age and
evolved to a very successful child actress and managed to bring the gap between
child stars and adult actresses by landing an Emmy winning role in Grey’s
Anatomy. A mother of three she has
successfully balanced the demands of career and being a parent.
On this day
in:
a. 1917 9 members of the Milwaukee Police Department were killed when a bomb
believed to have been planted next to a church was discovered and brought to
the police station for examination but shortly thereafter exploded; until 9/11 the
deaths represented largest number of police killed in any single attack and
sadly the perpetrators were never caught.
b. 1932 the FBI crime lab opened in
Washington, D.C.
c. 1963 in a really bad day for the
Dallas Police Department, on black and white live TV, Lee Harvey Oswald in
police custody was shot and killed by Jack Ruby while being transported to an
armored car to take him to the county jail.
d. 1971 during a thunderstorm, Dan Cooper aka D.B.
Cooper parachuted from the rear entry of a Boeing 727 with $200,000 of ransom
money; neither him nor the money was ever seen again.
e. 2013 in perhaps one of the low points in
American diplomacy and reflecting American weakness on the world stage, the
Iranians signed an agreement with the 5 permanent members of the Security
Council plus Germany that lifted the sanctions in existence on Iran due to its
illegal nuclear weapons program, an agreement many believe has created a path
to deliverable nuclear weapons status by a nation that continues to sponsor terror
in the Middle East and continues to assert that Israel be wiped off the face of
the Earth.
Reflections on spending
during this Black Friday:”The trouble with us in America isn't that the poetry
of life has turned to prose, but that it has turned to advertising copy.”
~Louis Kronenberger, noted 20th Century literary critic and author
He is right on point as ads have only one purpose, not to inform, entertain, or
kindle discussion but rather to induce someone to buy something not needed and
at a price one cannot afford. Please enjoy the poems
