Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For April
10, 2016. Only 285 days to go in President Obama’s pathetic lame
duck term. Political theater is getting more and more exciting as polls
released today show Clinton with double digit leads over Sanders in New York
and Pennsylvania and Trump with even more commanding double digit leads over
Cruz and Kasich. On the potential jumpsuit front Obama in an interview with Chris
Wallace of Fox News vowed no influence by him over the probe of Clinton’s
private email server—one can only that this is not a repeat of his blatant lie
to the American people “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,
period.” In a legacy destruction moment, Iran in essence now flush with cash
tells the U.S. to pound sand over their ICBM missile program. As always, I hope you enjoy
today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Frank and Nancy Sinatra,
factoids of interest, a relevant quote from Clara Ortega, while
looking forward to enjoying some cinnamon crescents (croissants), blessed with
a positive attitude and secure in the knowledge that
if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings,
or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with
a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the
event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Siblings Day—honoring the
importance of the relationships that siblings have with one another.
2. Encourage a Young Writer Day—in an era
of texting and Twitter writing stories, poems, and diaries seems to be on a
path to extinction; if you have a young child or know young children, today
would be a great day to encourage them to put their creative talents to paper
or to the computer. You may stimulate the creative talent of another C.S. Lewis
who started writing the Chronicles of Narnia at the young age of 8 or a Stephen
King who sold his first story at the age of 13.
3. 1967 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in
1967 on a run of four weeks in that position Something Stupid by that
great father and daughter duo, Frank and Nancy Sinatra. Here is a link to Frank
and Nancy Sinatra performing Something
Stupid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f48fpoSEPU
4. National Cinnamon
Crescent (if a Francophile croissant) Day—celebrating the perfect complement to a brunch or
breakfast and a great way to generate mouth watering aromas in the kitchen
during the baking process.
5. A Rising Star in
the Celebrity Wars—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1994 of Daisy Ridley (no
relation unfortunately) who played the role of Rey in Star Wars-Episode VII:
The Force Awakens with a lot of talent.
On this day in:
a. 1710 Statute of Anne was passed by the British Parliament
which was the first copyright act and replaced the prior system of the printers’
guild which regulated who could print works of authors.
b. 1815 Mt. Tambora in Indonesia
erupted and continued to erupt until July 15, 1815l spewing into the atmosphere
the largest amount of particles (38 cubic miles) in recorded history. The volcano
killed 71,000 people and affected globally the Earth’s climate—1816 became known
as "the year without a summer" due to the amount of ejecta in the
upper atmosphere which blocked out a good portion of the Sun’s rays from
hitting the Earth.
c. 1866 the American Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to animals was founded to the great joy of pets in the
nation by Henry Bergh.
d. 1916 as the final round of the
Masters Golf Tournament is being played a 100 years later, the Professional
Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) was founded.
e. 1972 74 nations signed the
Biological Weapons Convention, the first multinational treaty to ban the
production and use of biological weapons—another of the many steps we as human
beings need to take to prevent the destruction of this world. A number of nations have subsequently joined
raising the total signatories to 174; unfortunately ISIS not a nation but an
imagined caliphate definitely is not one of them and it would be a safe bet if
they could get their hands on a killer like anthrax they would use it without
hesitation.
Reflections on the power of sibling
relationships: “To the outside world,
we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we
always were. We know each other's hearts. We share private family jokes. We
remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the
touch of time." - Clara Ortega, noted author As this poet enters
the winter season of his life with the leaves slowing being covered by the
first flakes of snow, when he reflects on his successes and failure, joys and
regrets, the one regret that haunts him and will haunt him until the day he
dies is that he is an only child and has never experienced the joys his
children have had of having a sister and a brother.
