       1. National Day of Prayer—conserved since 1952 on the first Thursday in May when Americans are urged to use prayer and meditation to address problems facing them, their loved ones and the nation; given the chaos that is besetting the world and our own nation definitely the time to observe.

       2.  National Tourism Day—commemorating the easiest way to lower unemployment and decrease a budget deficit—an influx of tourists especially those visiting from outside of the United States although with a strong dollar may be difficult for some. If you see someone today whose look or accent might indicate him or her to be a tourist, be helpful, friendly and better yet encourage them in a nice way to spend more money, enjoy themselves and return.

      6. Martin Z. Mollusk Day—never underestimate the ability of Americans, especially those living in Ocean City, New Jersey after a hard, snowy winter, to create an event on National Tourists Day to attract tourists to spend money. If Martin Z. Mollusk, a hermit crab, sees his shadow today while crab walking to the ocean, summer will come one week early—top that Punxsutawney Phil! 

On this day in
       a. 1846 the oldest surviving  weekly newspaper the Cambridge Chronicle was first published; in an era of 24/7 news on TV, radio, and the internet, it is still circulated today to some 7,500 households in Cambridge.

       b. 1920 in a typical prePutin move, the Soviet Union and Georgia signed the Treaty of Moscow recognizing the independence of Georgia (Stalin’s place of birth) only to invade the country six months later.

       c. 1952 the concept of an integrated circuit, the foundation for computers, was first published by Geoffrey Dummer; six years later Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments was awarded a patent based on Dummer’s ideas.  
       d. 1954 after a siege of 55 days the battle of Dien Bien Phu ended with a crushing Vietnamese victory and humiliating French defeat causing the withdrawal of the French from Vietnam and laying the groundwork for Lyndon Johnson preoccupation with the siege of Khe Sahn 13 years later while the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese were diligently preparing to launch the TET offensive that turned American support in support of the war to opposition that grew each year.  

       e. 2000 in a sad day for world peace, Vladimir Putin was inaugurated President of the Russian Federation.
