December 5, 2020 Ridley's Beleive It Or Not World Soil Day

Ridley's Believe It Or Not December 5, 2020

CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues with 679,297 new cases (a 1.03%  increase compared to a 1.24% increase yesterday) to bring the total over  66 million to 66,693,605, 18,999,061 of  which  are active, 47,676,544 of which have been closed with 46,144,811  recoveries (96.78% compared to  yesterday’s 96.79%) and 1,531,733 deaths (3.21% compared to yesterday’s 3.22%) to continue the trend of increased recovery  percentages and decreased death percentages.
CV USA Cases: New cases 255,453 (a 1.74% increase compared to yesterday’s 2.0% increase) to bring the  total nearing 15 million  to  14,906,941 with 5,867,750 active cases of which 26,158 (.45% of active cases), recently on a disturbing upward trend with slight blips from a high of 19,155 on July 23  (26,184 yesterday which hopefully is the peak signaling the beginning of another decline and 15,881 on September 1), are in serious or critical condition as trend has shifted and is still continuing to go up, and 9,039,188 closures, 287,235 of which have been deaths (3.18% compared to yesterday’s 3.20%) and 8,751,956 of which have been recoveries (96.82% compared to yesterday’s 96.80%). Our death rate percentage continues to improve and are finally in single digits since Cuomo repealed on May 10 his order sending CV positive patients to nursing homes and ADL facilities and after many months is now .03% lower than the world rate and on a deaths per million population measurement on a steady climb to 866 ranks behind Belgium (1476), Peru (1091),  Spain (989), Italy (985), and UK (897 which has now passed us despite leading world in testing), and Argentina (871)  and only slightly worse than  Mexico (841), recently added to the list France (842), Brazil (825), Chile (813) that we recently passed,   Ecuador (775), Bolivia (765) and Sweden (698) that never closed its economy down like we did but has recently been experiencing a rapid rise in deaths and we have now conducted 1.958,889 more tests to bring total to 205,841,812 (now at 620,307/M compared to Russia at 539,716/M so Trump was telling truth that we conduct more tests in number and on a per capital basis for nations (other than those nations that contain small populations like Bahrain, Denmark,  Israel, Singapore and UAE) but for the U.K. which remains off the testing charts with tests at 658,618/M).
Non CV Case News: From a person I know who is on a film set, everyone gets a rapid test before they are allowed to enter so maybe it’s is not a double standard for a Hollywood film to be allowed to set up outdoor dining tents for cast and crew while a nearby restaurant has its outdoor dining shut down, but the optics for Garcetti and Newsom are terrible (another nail in the Newsom recall petition making the rounds); L.A. which has seen an explosion of murders to the highest number in a decade has its Thin Blue Line fighting the Red Line of proposed budget cuts that police  brass claim will cripple the LAPD; a flicker of hope that the candle of compromise might still exist after Pelosi quit holding the American people hostage, conservative Red Senator Josh Hawley and socialist Rep. AOC agree that stimulus checks need to be in the stimulus bill; we have heard the term RINO applied to some Reds now a retired Catholic bishop is calling Biden in essence a CINO and demanding he be denied Holy Communion; looks like the heavy hand of Twitter censorship when it applies to Trump as the biased social media giant is considering removing Trump’s status as a leader of interest when he leaves office (Twitter Curtain so much more dangerous to our freedoms than the Iron Curtain); 5th Circuit has ruled in favor of border security reversing a lower court ruling that blocked Trump in 2019 from using $3.8 billion in military construction funds to add to the Border Wall; De Blasio continues to be the mayor no one wants as news that 2500 311 calls relating to homeless seeking help or causing problems went unanswered due to $1 billion NYPD budget cuts.
Chicago/Baltimore Gun Violence: In Chicago as of December 4,  2020,  the number of shootings increased to 3,945 of whom  671 have died (total travesty of BLM when blacks are shot and killed by blacks in droves and only sounds of silence and complete absence of any protests in front of City Hall demanding action to curb the killings and shootings); Baltimore with a fraction of Chicago’s population and hoping against all hopes that 2020 will not be a record in terms of deaths but now seems to be shooting less and killing less and is still 363 behind Chicago at 308 murders (when will Chicago and Baltimore get serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by people of color and when will the left focus on the problem of color on color shootings in Blue run cities which  have  been way  more  deadly and way more numerous than shootings by  police or by random mass shootings which occur far much less.)

         1. International Volunteer Day—created by the General Assembly in 1986 to honor and promote volunteer activity for social and economic development as an important addition to governmental agencies engaged in the same endeavor.
         2. World Soil Day—created by the General Assembly to promote the preservation of top soil so critical for the production of food and to advance means to prevent its erosion.
         3. 1950 Number One Song— the number 1 song in 1950 on this day on a run of 4   weeks was “The Thing” by Phil Harris in his first number 1 to join 11 other number 1 songs. Here is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1tKZ3flZZY Phil Harris was a noted singer, band leader, actor, and pioneer in radio comedy in a career that spanned 58 years to die on August 11, 1995 at 91 years old.

         4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “primage” which means a fee paid for loading a ship which on a day when our fishing boat was laid up for repairs I earned for loading cases of canned salmon onto a cargo ship at the Chatham Cannery in 1963.

          5. Stars May Not Be Protection—celebrating the birth on this day in 1963 of Carrie Hamilton, daughter of Carol Burnett, and a noted actress but who starting smoking very early and had a period early in her career where she struggled with drugs and alcohol which she overcame but not lung cancer which spread to her brain and she died of pneumonia on January 20, 2002 at age 38.

          On this day in:

          a. 1776 Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic fraternity which has this poet as a member, held its first meeting in College of William and Mary.

           b. 1848 President James Polk in a message to Congress confirmed that gold had been discovered in California.

          c. 1933 the Twenty-First Amendment was ratified ending the Prohibition Experiment brought upon us by the Eighteenth Amendment.

           d. 1955 E.D. Dixon and Rosa Parks led the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

        e. 2017 in a Gotcha Moment, The International Olympic Committee banned Russia from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics for cheating in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Reflections on the need to overturn the 18th Amendment by a famous and wealthy teetotaler: “When the Eighteenth Amendment was passed I earnestly hoped… that it would be generally supported by public opinion and thus the day be hastened when the value to society of men with minds and bodies free from the undermining effects of alcohol would be generally realized. That this has not been the result, but rather that drinking generally has increased; that the speakeasy has replaced the saloon, not only unit for unit, but probably two-fold if not three-fold; that a vast army of lawbreakers has been recruited and financed on a colossal scale… I have slowly and reluctantly come to believe.” John D. Rockefeller.
