On this day in:

b. 1887 to the future joy of socialists like Bernie Sanders, the Fabian Society was founded in England.
c. 1965 in his State of the Union Address, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed plans to create the Great Society.
d. 1974 President Richard Nixon refused to turn over the Nixon Tapes to the Senate Committee investigating the Watergate break in.
e. 2007 Nancy Pelosi, perhaps the most dictatorial, biased and politically divisive person to wield a gavel, was elected as the first female to serve as the Speaker of the House.
Reflections on democracy and socialism from a noted 19th Century French political observer: “Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” Alexis de Tocqueville Obviously, Bernie Sanders has never read the observations of de Tocqueville or if he had given his age has long since forgotten his astute observations.
