May 13 History National Lebrechaun Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—May 13, 2015 Trust your hump day is proving to be a great one. As always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances (came very close to getting skunked today), factoids of interest, a music video of This Is How We Do It, and relevant quote from Stevie Wonder on his birthday , looking forward to a slice of apple pie with or without the cheddar cheese and ice cream, blessed  with a positive attitude even though you know you may have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like Fathers’ Day, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
       1. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County Day—celebrating on this day taking your favorite frog to Calaveras County or any other place with plenty of room to see if that amphibian can jump the farthest. We owe this holiday to Mark Twain and his short story of the same name.
       2. National Leprechaun Day—commemorating those seekers of a pot of gold near and dear to our hearts but why today is a mystery save it would be appropriate to follow  National Limerick Day yesterday with a celebration honoring the wee ones of Irish lore.
       3. 1995 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1995 on a seven week run This Is How We Do It by Montel Jordan, a hip hop and new jack swing (clueless of what that is) singer who left the business to become the pastor of the Victory World Church in Norcross, Georgia. Here is a link to a music video of Montel Jordan This Is How We Do It:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hiUuL5uTKc
       4. National Apple Pie Day—celebrating the quintessential American pie especially with a slice of cheddar on top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the side.
       5. It a Wonder Full Life—celebrating not the classic Christmas movie with Jimmy Stewart but the birthday on this day in 1950 of Stevie Wonder, a child prodigy blind from shortly after birth who signed with Motown Records at age 13 and who broke the record for Grammy Awards held by a solo artist with twenty-two titles and recorded over thirty top ten hits during his illustrious career.
On this day in
       a. 1880 Menlo Park, New Jersey Thomas Edison first tested his electric railway.
       b. 1939 the first commercial FM radio station was launched at Bloomfield, Connecticut under the call sign WDRC-FM 5; still going strong with a classic rock format.
       c. 1958 during a visit to Caracas, Venezuela, Vice President Richard Nixon’s car was attacked by anti-American protestors.
       d. 1963 in a landmark case for curbing prosecutorial misconduct and police misconduct in their criminal investigations, the Supreme Court held in Brady v. Maryland that the withholding of a confession by a co-defendant in a murder trial was a violation of due process and overturned the conviction of the co-defendant Brady.
       e. 1985 Philadelphia police making a mockery of the slogan of the City of Brotherly Love detonate a bomb to end a stalemate at MOVE headquarters, killing 11 MOVE members and destroying 65 homes of 250 neighbors.
        f. 1995 in a real bargain basement no frills climb a 33 year old mother Alison Hargreaves became the first woman to climb Mt. Everest without oxygen and without having any Sherpas to carry her gear and supplies.
Reflections on how even a man blind almost at birth has vision and clarity of view: “What I'm not confused about is the world needing much more love, no hate, no prejudice, no bigotry and more unity, peace and understanding. Period.” Stevie Wonder If only all the leaders on this planet had such clarity in viewing the planet and the issues that face us.
