As always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids of interest, a music video of The Sign, an original limerick by the Alaskanpoet in honor of National Limerick Day, and relevant quote from Yogi Berra to note his 90th, looking forward to a few pieces of Nutty Fudge, blessed  with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like Fathers’ Day, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
       1. International Nurses’ Appreciation Day—celebrating the contribution to our health care system of nurses around the world.
       2. Limerick Day—commemorating the birthday of Edward Lear on this day in 1812 who popularized the limerick in his 1846 book Nonsense.
There once was a lawyer who excelled in the practice of law
His clients, fellow lawyers and judges held him in great awe
A divorce lawyer who would go for the financial jugular vein
Pity the respondent watching his assets go down the drain
Revenge when his own spouse filed and revealed in his prenupt a fatal flaw
       3. 1994 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1994 on a two week run after initial four week run earlier The Sign by the Ace of Base, the third most successful band from Sweden after ABBA and Roxette. Here is a link to a music video of the Ace of Base performing The Sign:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqu132vTl5Y
       4. National Nutty Fudge Day—celebrating a classic snack which in addition to being chocolate intensive also has the protein in the nuts (my favorite would be almonds or filberts).
       5. Still Ain’t Over Till It’s Over--celebrating the birthday on this day in 1925 of one of the great catchers of Major League Baseball with 18 years of being an all star and best known off the field with some classic twisting of the English language.
On this day in
       a. 1933 as the Great Depression picks up steam, the Agricultural Adjustment Act was enacted to pay farmers subsidies for restricting production in an effort to end the deflation in farm prices that was devastating American farmers. In an era when millions around the globe and here in the U.S. still suffer from hunger, American farmers many of which are large corporate entities are still receiving federal subsidies.
       b. 1935 Doctor Bob and Bill Wilson (the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous) met at the home of Henrietta Siberling in Akron, Ohio.
       c. 1975 in the last official battle attributed to the Vietnam War, 220 U.S. Marines recapture the S.S. Mayaguez which had been captured by the Cambodian Khmer Rouge (of Killing Fields infamy), suffering almost 100 casualties in the process, including 41 dead, 3 of whom were captured and in flagrant violation of the laws of warfare then executed.
       d. 2002 former President Jimmy Carter visited Cuba, the first president, until Obama’s visit this year, in or out of office to visit the island since Castro’s 1959 revolution which toppled Batista.
        e. 2006 in a chilling foretaste of the volatility of places like Iran, Iranian Azeris who make up almost 20 percent of Iran’s population were insulted over a cartoon of a cockroach speaking Persian and engaged in nationwide riots, resulting in massive numbers of injured, death, and arrests, including the editor of the newspaper that published the cartoon.
A few Yogisms as he celebrates his 90th birthday today:
        1. “Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical.”
        2. “We made too many wrong mistakes.”
        3. “You can observe a lot just by watching.”
        4. “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Not since the likes of Dizzy Dean, a pitcher for many years with the St. Louis Cardinals and successful baseball announcer have we witnessed such fracturing of the English language. Happy 90th Yogi!
