May 11 History National Arthritis Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not—May 11, 2015 Trust your Mothers’ Day was a great one an and your Monday is proving to be the same. As always, I  hope you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids of interest, a music video of That’s the Way Love Goes and a relevant quote from Norm Chomsky, looking forward to a few Hostess Cupcakes, blessed  with a positive attitude even though you know you will have to wade through tons of spam in your inbox, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable event like Fathers’ Day, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
       1. National Root Canal Appreciation  Day—created by Chris Kramer, D.D.S., aka the Alaskanpoet the rock and roll dentist, for the first time this year to promote good dental health and appreciation for a procedure, albeit one none of us want to endure, that does save teeth.
       2. National Arthritis Awareness Month—commemorating the need to create awareness and raise money for this painful, and often crippling aliment that reminds each day that our joints were not designed to play sports nor last as long as our increasing life expectancy.
       3. 1993 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1993 on an eight week run That’s the Way Love Goes by Janet Jackson, sister of the late Michael Jackson and forever immortalized for her half time exposed moment at Super Bowl XXXVIII https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XKartWUMh0 Here is a link to a music video of Janet Jackson performing That’s the Way Love Goes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUOkg4jFNus
       4. National Hostess Cupcake Day—celebrating a classic snack kids still love (and some adults too).
       5. Brush Don’t Dilly Dally--celebrating the birthday on this day in 1904 of the great Spanish artist Salvador Dali.

On this day in
       a. 1820 the ship that will take Charles Darwin on his voyage to the Galapagos Islands to ultimately write The Evolution of the Species, the HMS Beagle was launched from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames.
       b. 1927 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. as its first president.
       c. 1973 citing government prosecutorial misconduct (sound familiar?) the court dismissed charges against Daniel Ellsberg for leaking the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times.
       d. 1995 170 countries extended indefinitely without conditions the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty; notably Iran, India,  and North Korea were not in the list of nations that acted. Read the chapter in Clinton Cash on the link between funds flowing into the Clinton Foundation and allowing India to receive American nuclear technology.
        e. 1998 India successfully  tested a nuclear weapon.
Reflections on the Pentagon Papers: “Reviewing the record of American intervention in Indochina in the Pentagon Papers, one cannot fail to be struck by the continuity of basic assumptions from one administration to the next. Never has there been the slightest deviation from the principle that a noncommunist regime must be imposed and defended, regardless of popular sentiment.”  Norm Chomsky, noted American linquist, philospher and political commentator
