Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For May 19, 2018 Meghan Markle and
Prince Harry were married today in a ceremony of total Camelot, elegance and
class (thank God in our divisive world of partisan politics there will always
be an England); another school shooting this one in a high school in Sante Fe,
Texas where 10 people were killed with a shotgun and 38 revolver owned and legally
acquired by the shooter’s father; more lava and evacuations in Hawaii with
warnings that the volcano is still very active and could blow at any moment
without any warning; Johnny Football after another stint at rehab has been
given another chance to return to professional football by announcing that he
had signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League; the
odd shooter at Trump’s Doral Resort, Johnathan Oddi, evidently is a male porn
stripper with a crush on Melania Trump; don’t hold your breath but rumors are
that China and the U.S. have agreed to an agreement to reduce our trade deficit
with China but at the same time in a tension escalating move China landed a bomber
capable of carrying nuclear weapons on a disputed island in the South China
Sea; Trump finally is fed up with the stalling and obstruction at the FBI and
DOJ and wants documents requested by Congress to be turned over pronto to
Congress; conservative Republicans have joined with Blues to defeat the Farm
Bill with its work requirements to get food stamp requirements over a snit with
Republican leadership on the need to vote on a restrictive immigration bill
first; in Chicago through May 18, 2018, 924 people mostly of color have been
shot by mostly people of color, of whom 143 have died (when will Chicago get
serious about this carnage or is this the case of true racism as a Blue run
city turns a deaf ear and a blind eye to the slaughter of people of color by
people of color?)
As always,
I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, a music link to Paul McCartney
and Stevie Wonder, factoids of interest for this day in history, the fact
that none of your children are mammothrepts and a relevant quote by Geraldine Laybourne on
youth and our future, secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any
memorable events like Father’s Day, college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries,
you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized
poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient. You

1. Hepatitis Testing Day—safe and easy way to determine if you have been exposed to
hepatitis A, B, or C is to be tested to avoid a whole bunch of medical
headaches.
2. Armed Forces Day—honoring since 1950 on the third Saturday in May, the contributions
to the nation of the men and women serving and who have served in the Armed
Forces of the United States.
3. 1982 Number One Song— the number one song in 1982 on a run of 9 weeks in that
position was “Ebony and Ivory” by Paul McCarty and Stevie Wonder. Here
is a recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZtiJN6yiik
4. Word of the Day—today’s word of the day is “mammothrept” which means a spoiled
child which probably describes too many of our politicians or celebrities when
they do not get their way.
5. No Wasteland Here
Newton—celebrating
the birthday on this day in 1947 of TV programming giant Geraldine Laybourne who joined Nickelodeon when it had
only 5 employees as a program manager to grow it into 8 billion dollars in sales
and then after a stint at Disney founded Oxygen Media which she grew to
10,000,000 subscribers and sold it for almost 1 billion dollars.
On this day in:
On this day in:
a. 1921 the U.S. passed the Emergency Quota Act imposing limits
on immigration into this country which resulted in proportionally more
residents of Northern Europe being admitted and total legal immigration
falling.
b. 1959 North Vietnam established Group 559 whose responsibility
was to insure the movement of men and supplies into South Vietnam over what
came to be known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a task for which it had great
success despite all attempts of the U.S. to stop the flow with massive
bombings.
c. 1963 The New York Post
Sunday Magazine published Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
protesting Jim Crow laws on the books in Alabama.
d. 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Firearm
Owners Protection Act which curbed the federal government’s power to prosecute gun
owners for minor technical violations of gun laws, allowed for the sale of
ammunition through the Post Office and allowed gun owners to transport guns
through states where that transportation would be illegal.
e. 2015 a twenty-eight year old oil pipeline near Refugio State
Beach near Santa Barbara ruptured, spilling 3,400 barrels of oil before being
shut off manually since the operators had disconnected the automatic shut off
valve.
Reflections on the youth’s
influence on the future: “Who cares about 17-21 year olds? Jack Myers does, and
you should, too, if you want a front row seat on where the future of business
and civilization is going.”Geraldine Laybourne Please
