August 1, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not World Scout Scarf Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not For August 1, 2016 Only 99  days to go before we elect a new president and 240 days since Hillary has held a formal press conference (although she has finally did an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News tonight, where is the outrage of the press?); Trump continues to go off message with the Khan flap (the master of the art of deal really blew and then doubled down by comparing his sacrifices to the loss of a son in the uniform of the U.S. military) and whining about the debate schedule that conflicts with NFL games; when will his campaign advisers pound home the idea that this election is about jobs, border security, and terrorism and that for communities of color jobs will be his number one priority? If not Trump is going to lose and potentially take the Reds in the House and Senate with him; in another chilling reminder of why HRC’s plan to admit 500,000+ Syrian refugees is fraught with danger as in Belgium another priest was wounded by an asylum seeker who is on the run; in another chilling reminder of officers putting their lives on the line to protect us, an officer in Illinois is in critical condition after being shot chasing a van speeding from an area where gun shots were heard (suspect still at large). Today marks the day that Trump and Hillary will receive classified material briefings although Reid with partisan rhetoric implied with no basis or justification that because of Trumps accolades of Putin he should not be allowed to receive but okay for Hillary who was “extremely careless” to receive such sensitive information.
On the Olympics front, dire warnings of viral and bacterial contamination of Rio’s waterways where rowing events will occur to the point that a mere ingestion of a couple teaspoons of water will pose problems for athletes http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2016/08/01/expert-to-rio-athletes-dont-put-your-head-under-water.html  If you are going to Rio to watch the Olympics in person, stay out of the water and avoid even walking on the beach. At least the subway extension to the Olympics has been completed which should make it easier for the thousands of protestors who support Roussef’s impeachment or who are opposed to get to their protest sites ( one prays that we will not see a sequel to the Tlatelolco massacre where over 300 student protestors were killed 10 days before the start of the Mexico City Olympics in 1968). To everyone’s amazement no new Russian athletes were banned due to doping from the Olympics.

5. Dead Is Just Dead Even If Grateful—celebrating the birthday on this day in 1942 of the Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist and songwriter for the Grateful Dead, who like many artists of the 60’s and 70’s struggled with addiction and at the early age of 53, while his guitar was still in tune but his heart from all the prior drug usage was no longer, died from a heart attack.
On this day in:
a. 1834 slavery in the British Empire was abolished; unfortunately for us it would take a bloody Civil War for us to arrive at the same state.
b. 1911 Harriet Quinby in another glass ceiling breaking moment passed her pilot’s examine and became the first woman in the U.S. to receive from the Aero Club of America her aviator’s license but flew for less than a year before being killed by being thrown from her airplane without a parachute at 1500 feet—not a good way to go.
c. 1957 the U.S. and Canada form the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
d. 1981 MTV began broadcasting for the first time the new music form music videos with its first performance aptly titled “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hs4Gg7RDnc (compared to the music videos of today definitely a baby’s first step).
e. 2014 the Istanbul Convention outlawing violence against women and domestic violence came into force and has now been signed by 42 countries but not countries like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan where women are treated like second class citizens and live in fear of honor killings.
Reflections on advice on violence against women: “Look guys no matter what a girl does, no matter how she’s dressed, no matter how much she’s had to drink, it’s never, never, never, never OK to touch her without her consent. That doesn’t make you a man. It makes you a coward. Joe Biden, April 2011 Growing up in Alaska, I could not agree with Biden more.  Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
