1. World Parkinson’s Disease Day—celebrating the need to raise money to find a cure for this debilitating disease that affects millions around the world and slowly destroys a person’s to perform even the most basic mobility functions and results in a slow death.
2. Barbershop Quartet Day—celebrating the formation of the American Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Quartets and the Encouragement of Barbershop Singing on this day in 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here is a music video of this unique form of American music that appeared in America in the early 1900’s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRu3CZfteyY
3. 1963 Number Two Song—In honor of Louie Louie Day (birthday of Richard Berry), today we break tradition and celebrate that iconic song written by Richard Berry in 1955 but released by the Kingsmen in 1963 which hit number two (hard to believe it never rose to number one) on December 14, 1963 for a six week run. Quite a contrast to the barbershop quartets and also hard to believe but under Hoover’s FBI the Kingsmen’s recording was under investigation for obscenity. Here is a music video of the Kingsmen performing Louie Louie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V1p1dM3snQ
4. National Cheese Fondue Day—celebrating that perfect way to consume cheese with a group of friends (my first experience to this dish was in Geneva 1966 when as a typical starving student while waiting for the fondue to be brought to my table, I ate all the bread to my waiter’s surprise and needed either a spoon or more bread).
5. New Inferno Day—commemorating not Dante’s Inferno but rather bemoaning the birth on this day in 1930 of Anthony DeVay who founded the Church of Satan and was the author of the Satanic Bible.
On this day in
a. 1919 the International Labor Organization was founded.
b. 1951 validating the civilian control over our armed forces, President Harry Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur of his command in Korea.
c. 1968 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights
Act of 1968 prohibiting discrimination in the sale, leasing and financing of housing.
d. Apollo 13 was launched and justifying the fears of triskaidekaphobiacs everywhere almost ended in complete disaster; although the lunar landing was aborted, Apollo 13 managed to get the crew back alive.
e. 1976 the Apple 1 with 4 kb’s of memory and a purchase price of $666.66 ($2820.54 in 2015 dollars) was released.
Reflections on Parkinson’s Disease and acceptance: “I have no choice about whether or not I have Parkinson's. I have nothing but choices about how I react to it. In those choices, there's freedom to do a lot of things in areas that I wouldn't have otherwise found myself in.” Michael J. Fox, noted actor who has Parkinson’s Disease
