July 11, 2016 Ridley's Believe It Or Not World Population Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not July 11, 2016 193 days left to endure President Obama’s term which is now being marked by a collapse in some cities of race relations as BLM has been organizing protests across the nation and even in London  over the police shootings of blacks, usually unarmed, which in the case of Minneapolis and Baton Rouge turned violent with over a hundred arrests in both cities; the impromptu memorial to the slain Dallas police officers grows each day; mothers always protect their sons but how could the mother of the shooter ignore all the bomb making material her son had in the home he shared with her; Trump slammed the VA rightfully so and HRS as being incompetent to fix the problem; and to no one’s surprise a majority of Americans polled believe that HRC should have been indicted; with the Blue platform thanks to Sanders being the most leftist in its history, watch for a Sanders endorsement (had he attacked her on her emails instead of giving her a free pass wonder if he would be the nominee)?
On the sports front, another high profile athlete has announced due to Zika virus fears, that he will not compete in the Olympics in Rio and Tim Duncan announced his retirement from pro basketball.
On the good news front sad to say nothing worthy of note other than today is the day to get a free slurpee and  the fact the stock markets are in a bull frenzy and worse on July 12 Starbucks is going to be raising its prices—time to start going to McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts for internet and coffee.  www.lyingcrookedhillay.com is a great way to start your day along of course with www.alaskanpoet.blogspot.com
As always, I hope  you enjoy today’s holidays and observances,  a music link to 2Pac, factoids of interest,  a relevant quote from Burt Rutan while looking forward to enjoying a blueberry muffin and a free 7-11 slurpee, blessed with a positive attitude and  secure in  the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for any memorable events like birthdays, weddings, or  anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem  at a great price  tailored to the event and the recipient. You need only contact me for details.
1. Free Slurpee Day—celebrating at 7-11 stores today until 7 p.m. a free  slurpee; this is an observance we can all get behind and support.
2. World Population Day—observed by the UN to call its member nations to address the issues and problems associated with a growing population in terms of poverty, consumption, and resource allocation as the number of humans on this planet approaches 8 billion people.
3. 1996 Number One Song—celebrating the number one song in 1996 on a run of two weeks which seems way too long in that position “How Do You Want It?” by a successful rapper 2Pac who was gunned down in Las Vegas by gang members believed to be from the Crips. Here is a link to 2Pac performing “How Do You Want It?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9KWYwczHEw
4. National Blueberry Muffin Day—celebrating a great way to utilize the blueberries you picked yesterday to observe Pick Blueberries Day instead of quaffing down a few pina coladas.
5. Bald May Be Beautiful But Smoking is Notcelebrating the birthday on this day in 1920 of Yul Bryner, well known for his performance in The King and I and The Magnificent Seven who started smoking at the age of 12 and although he quit finally in 1971 succumbed to lung cancer in 1985 but not before making a very powerful antismoking commercial which aired after his death in 1985; same fate of my father who was a heavy smoker until a stroke caused him to quit in 1988 only to die of lung cancer in 1999. Terrible habit and a terrible way to die.
On this day in:
a. 1796 the U.S. took possession of Detroit from Great Britain pursuant to the Jay Treaty.
b. 1798 after being disbanded following the Revolutionary War the U.S. Marine Corps was reestablished to protect the fleet which had been reauthorized by Congress in 1794.
c. 1914 Babe Ruth made his debut as a major league left handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. d. 1962 the first transatlantic satellite television transmission occurred using Telstar which had been put into orbit the previous day.
e. 1979 after six years in space orbiting the Earth, America’s first space station Skylab reentered the Earth’s atmosphere and burned up over the Indian Ocean.
Reflections on Skylab and the missed opportunity of space flight for us mere mortals.” By 1973, we had a space station, the Skylab, and we had multiple probes going up to planets. So, all this wonderful stuff happened in 10 to 15 years. About that time, there should have been enormous initiatives to make it affordable for people to fly in space, not just a handful of trained NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts.” Burt Rutan, noted aeronautical engineer and designer of Voyager the first plane to fly around the world without refueling.  Please enjoy the poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and follow me) and follow my blogs.
