June 27, 2021 Ridley's Believe It Or Not National PTSD Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not June 27, 2021

CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues on a slowing down basis the new year with cases now over 181 million at 181,756,397 cases (181,524,727 yesterday), 11,563,527 of which are active, 170,192,870 closed with 166,256,238 recoveries (97.69% and 97.69% yesterday), and 3,936,632 deaths (2.31% and 2.31% yesterday) to continue the slow trend of increased cases with increased recovery percentages and decreased death percentage with some plateaus, dips, and rises.
CV USA Cases: Total cases now over 34 million at 34,490,328 (34,488,248 yesterday) with 4,957,926 active cases of which 3,833 (3,856) yesterday and 8,599 on 3/25/2021) (now down to .077% of active cases and now back to 23 serious or critical cases decrease to increase the reduction from the 29,271 peak on 12/31/2020 to 25,438), 29,532,402 closed, with 619,358 deaths (2.10% and 2.10% yesterday) and with 28,913,044 recoveries (97.90% and 97.90% yesterday). Our death rate percentage continues to slowly improve and after many months is still .21% lower than the world’s death rate.

Standing: On a deaths per million population measure on a steady   but slow climb to 1860 the U.S. ranks behind Peru (5732) the new number 1 which has had a quantum leap in deaths previously unmatched which was a change in the classification to give Peru the a new method of reporting to have a fatality rate of 9.38% of total cases now; Hungary the new number 2 has had a huge continuing surge in deaths with the increase now slowing down and improving slightly to  3.91% of its closed cases have died (3111), aping Hungary in terms of increase in deaths Bulgaria (2614),   Brazil (2396) which has been hit with a rapid rise in deaths and cases and passed us and Italy, Belgium (2162), Italy (2111), Argentina (2024), Poland (1983), and the UK (1877) which had passed us despite leading world in testing and now has new deaths barely increasing),  and slightly better than Mexico (1785), Romania (1740), Spain (1727),  France (1696),  Portugal (1680),  Chile (1675), Sweden (1435) that never closed its economy down like we did, Bolivia (1399) and Switzerland (1248).
Tests: We have now conducted 503,469,781 tests (now at 1,512,316/M) compared to number 2 now France at 1,414,448/M) as we are conducting more tests in number and on a per capital basis for all nations (other than those nations that contain small populations like Bahrain, Denmark, Israel, Malta, Singapore and UAE) other than the U.K. which remains as king of the mountain with respect to tests at 3,035,948/M.
CV Open Gate: Lost in the pronouncements by Biden and his lackeys   that there is no crisis of illegals surging across the border is that fact that COVID-19 is alive and well and spreading in the Northern Triangle and Mexico which been passed by Argentina to move down to 11th  on my list of deaths from the pandemic  at 1785/M with a fatality rate of 10.48% of closed cases and the 3 countries in the Northern Triangle in terms of active cases and deaths per million are as follows even though the data may be suspect as underreported (regardless of number we need no more cases):
                    Guatemala:  Active Cases:  20,374  Deaths/M  496
                    Honduras:    Active Cases: 160,403  Deaths/M  688
                    El Salvador:  Active Cases:    3,514  Deaths/M  363
US Vaccinations: As of 6/27/21 323.3 million doses with after 4 days of decreasing doses finally increasing from .748 million per day to .803 million per day which means if the rate does not increase it will take now take us  some 6 months to miss Biden’s goal of having 75% of the population vaccinated which many believe is necessary to develop herd immunity ( other than Flip Flop Fauci who is suggesting 90%). In California 42,312,077 total doses have been given (86.3% of doses received to exceed the U.S. average of 84.8%), but even with the pressure of a recall to be scheduled this fall which hopefully end Newsom’s term, California remains alone in 21st  of the 50 states in terms of the percentage of doses administered as a percentage of doses delivered to the states and at 49.4% of its population fully vaccinated compared to the U.S. average of 46.1% has  moved down 18th to 23rd  among the 50 states.  A long way to go still to get herd immunity in terms of getting vaccines received into arms and the percentage of the population fully vaccinated compared to other states which means a great reason to recall this inept and hypocritical governor.
Non  CV News: In Miami the 9th body has been recovered with 156 still missing and if in the ruble rapidly running out of survival time as concerns rising the e North Tower may be in danger of aping the South Tower (as a precautionary move Miami has ordered a safety audit of all resident structures higher that 5 stories and the Army Corps of Engineers is examining the North Tower); not as bad as the Black Power Salute in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics but close as Gwen Berry, a black female athlete who won the Bronze Medal in the hammer throw at the Olympic Trials turned her back on the flag while on the podium and covered her head with a “Activist Athlete” T-shirt; 30 miles out from the finish line of Stage 1 of the Tours de France, a female spectator holding a large cardboard sign caused a massive crash of riders, seriously injuring several riders, and fled from the scene as French police are now looking for her ( the event has to be one of the few where spectators are not kept back and pose a safety hazard to themselves and the riders); Biden must not remember what he believes in as after turning thumbs down to the dismay of senators who were working tirelessly to craft an infrastructure bill the compromise if it did not include his massive social spending, he reversed and said he would sign it (another sign of growing dementia?); never underestimate the ability of the Cancel Culture Wokes to find systematic racism in every nook and cranny of our society with the National Archives Commission reporting that the Rotunda in the Capitol which displays our founding documents is structurally racist as the Founding Fathers are portrayed too positively (when will “racism” be so commonly found in the left’s warped minds that no one pays any attention to their racist rants); the Texas Supreme Court dismissed law suits filed by the estates of the survivors of those gunned down in 2017 at the Sutherland Church because the gun shop followed the law and conducted a background check which did not reveal that the shooter while in the Air Force had been court martialed for assault on his wife and child (law suits against the Air Force for its negligence in failing to report are still ongoing); as murders and shootings in our large cities are skyrocketing a news item that will shake your faith in the criminal justice system as Ira Grayson after being released on “supervised probation” awaiting a hearing on whether he should be returned to prison, shot and killed a father in front of his kids on Father’s Day and is now in jail without bail for murder, illegal drugs and illegal firearm possession:

After De Blasio was seen promoting tourism in NYC, a tourist walking with his family in broad daylight in Times Square was shot by 2 Hispanic males that remain at large; the developers that built the Champlain Towers are being accused of shady practices in its construction and operation but the principals involve are long since dead; in addition to the expanding controversy over teaching CRT schools, in Minneapolis a controversy has arisen over the Lakewood School District reversing its ban of political signs in classrooms and was excoriated by Novalee, a 9 year old, for not removing a Black Lives Matter sign from her classroom which supposedly members of the School Board Created; leave it to the political cartoonist to portray the heavy hand of the government in quashing dissent on this issue:

Chicago Gun Violence: Hey Jackass.com is alive and well to collect data to show that through June 26, 2,021, gun violence involving mostly persons of color shooting mostly persons of color in Chicago is alive and well with 1872 persons shot of whom 320 have died.

               2. Helen Keller Day—created by the mayor of Newark, New Jersey Leo P. Carlin on March 23, 1960 and celebrated on her birthday to honor the accomplishments of Helen Keller to overcome her challenges of being deaf and blind and becoming the first deafblind person to achieve a bachelor of arts degree enroute to becoming an author, lecturer and activist.
              3. 1946 Number 1 Song USA—the number 1 song in 1946 on this day on a run of 10 weeks not continuous in the position was “The Gypsy” by the Ink Spots to join 14 other songs in the number 1 position. Here is a recording of “The Gypsy” by The Ink Spots:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG6g5CkyWAo
              4.  Word of the Day—the word of the day is “rumbustious” which means boisterous which describes behavior often found in bars and taverns after too many libations.                     5.  All Ears--celebrating the birth on this day in 1930 of Ross Perot,  a  Texas businessman who founded Electronic Data Systems and made millions from its sale and as a 3rd Party candidate received almost 20% of the vote in the election where he ran against George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and probably resulted in Clinton becoming president. After saying in the campaign he would be here for a long time he passed at age 89 on July 9, 2019.

              On this day in:

              b. 1950 the United States decided to send troops to Korea to stop the invasion by North Korea of South Korea.
              c. 1974 President Richard Nixon visited the Soviet Union.
              d.  1994 members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult in a warmup to the sarin nerve gas attack in the Tokyo Subway 9 months later released Sarin nerve gas in Matsumoto, Japan, killing 8 and injuring over 500.
              e. 2007 Tony Blair after serving as the British Prime Minister for 10 years resigned.               Reflections on the PTSD: “Trauma is personal. It does not disappear if it is not validated. When it is ignored or invalidated the silent screams continue internally heard only by the one held captive. When someone enters the pain and hears the screams healing can begin.”―Danielle Bernock, Emerging With Wings: A True Story of Lies, Pain,And the LOVE that Heals

June 26, 2021 Ridley's Believe It Or Not Bartender and Mixologist Day

Ridley’s Believe It Or Not June 26, 2021

CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues on a slowing down basis the new year with cases now over 181 million at 181,524,727 cases (181,190,692 yesterday), 11,572,549 of which are active, 169,952,758 closed with 166,020,447 recoveries (97.69% and 97.69% yesterday), and 3,932,101 deaths (2.31% and 2.31% yesterday) to continue the slow trend of increased cases with increased recovery percentages and decreased death percentage with some plateaus, dips, and rises.
CV USA Cases: Total cases now over 34 million at 34,488,248 (34,482,272 yesterday) with 4,959,056 active cases of which 3,856 (3,855) yesterday and 8,599 on 3/25/2021) (now down to .078% of active cases and now back to 1 serious or critical cases increase to decrease the reduction from the 29,271 peak on 12/31/2020 to 25,415), 29,529,152 closed, with 619,328 deaths (2.10% and 2.10% yesterday) and with 28,909,824 recoveries (97.90% and 97.90% yesterday). Our death rate percentage continues to slowly improve and after many months is still .21% lower than the world’s death rate.

Standing: On a deaths per million population measure on a steady   but slow climb to 1860 the U.S. ranks behind Peru (5728) the new number 1 which has had a quantum leap in deaths previously unmatched which was a change in the classification to give Peru the a new method of reporting to have a fatality rate of 9.38% of total cases now; Hungary the new number 2 has had a huge continuing surge in deaths with the increase now slowing down and improving slightly to  3.91% of its closed cases have died (3111), aping Hungary in terms of increase in deaths Bulgaria (2614),   Brazil (2395) which has been hit with a rapid rise in deaths and cases and passed us and Italy, Belgium (2162), Italy (2110), Argentina (2024), Poland (1983), and the UK (1877) which had passed us despite leading world in testing and now has new deaths barely increasing),  and slightly better than Mexico (1784), Romania (1736), Spain (1727),  France (1696),  Portugal (1680),  Chile (1668), Sweden (1435) that never closed its economy down like we did, Bolivia (1395) and Switzerland (1248).

Tests: We have now conducted 503,442,787 tests (now at 1,512,259/M) compared to number 2 now France at 1,410,039/M) as we are conducting more tests in number and on a per capital basis for all nations (other than those nations that contain small populations like Bahrain, Denmark, Israel, Malta, Singapore and UAE) other than the U.K. which remains as king of the mountain with respect to tests at 3,035,991/M.

CV Open Gate: Lost in the pronouncements by Biden and his lackeys   that there is no crisis of illegals surging across the border is that fact that COVID-19 is alive and well and spreading in the Northern Triangle and Mexico which been passed by Argentina to move down to 11th  on my list of deaths from the pandemic  at 1784/M with a fatality rate of 10.48% of closed cases and the 3 countries in the Northern Triangle in terms of active cases and deaths per million are as follows even though the data may be suspect as underreported (regardless of number we need no more cases):

                    Guatemala:  Active Cases:  20,711  Deaths/M  494

                    Honduras:    Active Cases: 159,194  Deaths/M  686

                    El Salvador:  Active Cases:    3,525  Deaths/M  361

US Vaccinations: As of 6/26/21 322.1 million doses with 4 days of decreasing doses to .748 million per day which means if the rate does not increase it will take now take us  some 7 months to miss Biden’s goal of having 75% of the population vaccinated by the 4th of July which many believe is necessary to develop herd immunity. In California 42,103,167 total doses have been given (85.9% of doses received to exceed the U.S. average of 84.5%), but even with the pressure of a recall to be scheduled this fall which hopefully end Newsom’s term, California remains alone in 21st  of the 50 states in terms of the percentage of doses administered as a percentage of doses delivered to the states and at 49.0% of its population fully vaccinated compared to the U.S. average of 45.8% has  moved up from 16th to 18th  among the 50 states.  A long way to go still to get herd immunity in terms of getting vaccines received into arms and the percentage of the population fully vaccinated compared to other states which means a great reason to recall this inept and hypocritical governor.

Non  CV News: In Miami the 5th body has been recovered with over 150 missing and if in the ruble rapidly running out of survival time as concerns rising the the North Tower of the South Tower that collapsed may be in danger of aping the South Tower (as a precautionary mover Miami has ordered a safety audit of all resident structures higher that 5 stories); the 5 who died in the South probably have not been released from the morgues and a class action suit against the HOA has been filed seeking $5 million in damages for failure of the HOA to remedy the defects to the building that may have arisen to cause the collapse; hot air balloon rides are supposed to be a relaxing ride celebrated with champagne on landing not a death which occurred in New Mexico when a hot air balloon ran into a power line, knocking out power to 13,000 residents and killing 5 riders in the balloon; Zuckerberg the high tech mogul of Facebook we have learned to despise may have had his arrogant wings clipped as a Texas Court has ruled that Facebook may be liable for allowing sex trafficking to occur on its Message platforms (the Section 230 shield that Facebook’s algorithms have hidden behind to censor conservative thought and speech may find itself eroding to the joy of banned conservative tweeters and posters); the Biden Administration has added another $500 million of student debt incurred by students who enrolled in classes at ITT to be cancelled because they claimed they were misled  to the already $1.5 billion already cancelled from other schools for the same reason; as the Pacific Northwest is sweltering under record heat, news out that 90% of the West will be suffering under drought condition that are expected to last through the summer (when will the light bulbs go on to start building desalinization plants powered by natural gas or nuclear power to convert abundant sea water into fresh water?); the black shooter narrowly missing two small terrified children on video has been captured and revealed to have been on parole with a rap sheet a mile long ( here is the face no restraint attempts to kill:

the NYC Pride Organizer is ranting that the police uniform is “a symbol of oppression, a symbol of violence, a symbol of fear” (he must foolishly believe that gays have not any need to call upon police in the event of crime which is an insane idea; as Blues want to expand the goody bag for illegals like in Oregon were illegals will soon be eligible for Medicaid how could we not expect any sane illegal risking life and limb to be able to enjoy great benefits here in the United States; as the outcries of female athletes being forced by Biden policies to compete against biological male transgenders continues to rise, leave it to the political cartoonist to point out graphically the unfair advantage and the possible death of Title IX:

Chicago Gun Violence: Hey Jackass.com is alive and well to collect data to show that through June 23, 2,021, gun violence involving mostly persons of color shooting mostly persons of color in Chicago is alive and well with 1861 persons shot of

whom 320 have died.

As always, I hope you enjoy today’s holidays and observances, factoids of interest for this day in history, a recording musical link to “Sentimental Journey” by Les Brown and His Orchestra and Doris Day, the fact that as you age you are only rugulous and a quote by George M. Hall on the Pershing and the A.E.F. in WWI, secure in the knowledge that if you want to send a gift for any memorable events like Fourth of July, college graduations, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.             1.  International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-- created by the General Assembly on December 7, 1987 and first celebrated on this day in 1989 to promote efforts to halt the flow of illegal drugs and illicit trafficking which any trip to the border not over 8 miles away would convince anyone even an illegal alien czar that we are losing big time this struggle.

           2. Bartender and Mixologist Day—created by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway and celebrated on the last Saturday in June since 2013 to celebrate the talents of bartenders and mixologists who are skilled in concocting the perfect drink to complement one’s day and in some cases be a listener and part-time psychologist to a drinker with a host of issues.

               3. 1945 Number 1 Song USA—the number 1 song in 1945 on this day on a run of 9 weeks not continuous in the position was “Sentimental Journey” by Les Brown and His Orchestra and Doris Day to join 8 other songs in the number 1 position. Here is a recording of “Sentimental Journey” by Les Brown and His Orchestra and Doris Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7umIJj8UBo

             4.  Word of the Day—the word of the day is “rugulous” which means having small wrinkles which is given the choice of the type of the wrinkles to have would be the preferred choice.

               5.  Marrying a President’s Daughter Wise Career Move--celebrating the birth on this day in 1984 of Chuck Robb a former Marine Corps Officer who married Lynda Bird Johnson and after the Marine Corps went on to serve as the Governor of Virginia and its Senator and still alive today.

               On this day in:

            a. 1917 proving the Germans wrong that their submarines would prevent American Troops from landing in Europe so they could pursue unrestricted submarine warfare against convoys bringing supplies to England and France, the first contingent of the American Expeditionary Force under General Pershing started landing in France to go into combat some 4 months later and start to turn the tide of WWI in the Allies’ favor.

               b. 1974 the Universal Product Code was used for the first time in a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio scanning a package of Wrigley’s Chewing Gum.

             c. 2003 SCOTUS ruled 6-3 in the case of   Lawrence v.Texas   that gender-based laws on sodomy were unconstitutional.

             d.  2013 SCOTUS ruled 5-4 that the Defense of Marriage Act denying federal recognition of marriage of same sex couples was in violation of the Due Process of the 5th Amendment.

             e. 2015 SCOTUS ruled 5-4 in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges that same sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the 14th Amendment.

Reflections on the Pershing and the contributions of the A.E.F. to the victory in WWI: “The tactics of trench warfare had devolved into a genocidal meat grinder, into which Pershing had no intention of feeding Americans even if it would have meant eventual victory by attrition. Instead, he advocated maneuver warfare. The problem was that he first had to prove that U.S. soldiers could fight effectively against massed troops supported by murderous machine-gun fire and backed by relentless heavy artillery. Only a Don Quixote would dream of prevailing against those odds. Pershing needed a battlefield that offered at least some temporary room for maneuver. The opportunity arose during the Aisne-Marne offensive, especially at Cantigny, Reims, and Belleau Wood.” George M. Hall, The Fifth Star: High Command in an Era of Global War (1994)

CV World Cases: The CV pandemic across the planet continues on a slowing down basis the new year with cases now over 181 million at 181,190,692 cases (180,779,184 yesterday), 11,486,916 of which are active, 169,703,776 closed with 165,778,491 recoveries (97.69% and 97.69% yesterday, and 3,925,285 deaths (2.31% and 2.31% yesterday) to continue the slow trend of increased cases with increased recovery percentages and decreased death percentage with some plateaus, dips, and rises.
CV USA Cases: Total cases now over 34 million at 34,482,272 (34,464,946 yesterday) with 4,966,060 active cases of which 3,855 (3,884) yesterday and 8,599 on 3/25/2021) (now down to .078% of active cases and now back to decreases of 29 cases   of serious or critical cases to increase  the reduction from the 29,271 peak on 12/31/2020 to 25,416), 29,516,612 closed, with 619,152 deaths (2.10% and 2.10% yesterday) and with 28,897,460 recoveries (97.90% and 97.90% yesterday). Our death rate percentage continues to slowly improve and after many months is still .21% lower than the world’s death rate.

Standing: On a deaths per million population measure on a steady   but slow climb to 1860 the U.S. ranks behind Peru (5728) the new number 1 which has had a quantum leap in deaths previously unmatched which was a change in the classification to give Peru the a new method of reporting to have a fatality rate of 9.38% of total cases now; Hungary the new number 2 has had a huge continuing surge in deaths with the increase now slowing down and improving slightly to  3.91% of its closed cases have died (3111), aping Hungary in terms of increase in deaths Bulgaria (2614),   Brazil (2389 which has been hit with a rapid rise in deaths and cases and passed us and Italy, Belgium (2162), Italy (2110), Argentina (2017), Poland (1983), and the UK (1877) which had passed us despite leading world in testing and now has new deaths barely increasing),  and slightly better than Mexico (1784), Spain (1727), Romania (1722), France (1696),  Portugal (1680),  Chile (1661), Sweden (1435) that never closed its economy down like we did, Bolivia (1395) and Switzerland (1248).                  Tests: We have now conducted 503,006,392 tests (now at 1,510,948/M) compared to number 2 now France at 1,406,463/M) as we are conducting more tests in number and on a per capital basis for all nations (other than those nations that contain small populations like Bahrain, Denmark, Israel, Malta, Singapore and UAE) other than the U.K. which remains as king of the mountain with respect to tests at 3,035,991/M.
                    Guatemala:  Active Cases:  20,177  Deaths/M  491
                    Honduras:    Active Cases: 159,194  Deaths/M  686
                    El Salvador:  Active Cases:    3,525  Deaths/M  361
US Vaccinations: As of 6/25/21 321.2 million doses with 3 days of decreasing doses to .763 million per day which means if the rate does not increase it will take now take us  some 6 months to miss Biden’s goal of having 75% of the population vaccinated by the 4th of July which many believe is necessary to develop herd immunity. In California 41,985,070 total doses have been given (85.9% of doses received to exceed the U.S. average of 84.5%), but even with the pressure of a recall to be scheduled this fall which hopefully end Newsom’s term, California has finally  moved up 22nd tied with Ohio to 21st  of the 50 states in terms of the percentage of doses administered as a percentage of doses delivered to the states and at 48.8% of its population fully vaccinated compared to the U.S. average of 45.7% has  moved up from 17th to 16th  among the 50 states.  A long way to go still to get herd immunity in terms of getting vaccines received into arms and the percentage of the population fully vaccinated compared to other states which means a great reason to recall this inept and hypocritical governor.
Non  CV News: In Minneapolis, the judge threw the book at Chauvin ignoring sentencing guidelines of 12 ½ years and sentencing him to 22 ½ years not the 30 that the Floyd family wanted but when coupled with a likely guilty verdict trial in the fed’s case for depriving Floyd of his civil rights will most likely mean Chauvin will die in prison if his conviction is not reversed; the death toll in the Champlain Tower Condominium collapse has risen to 4 and the missing number has risen to 159 as searchers putting their own lives at risk continue to search for survivors (how could anyone survive the collapse of 12 stories on top of them as this graphic photo shows?):

Where’s Waldo from the safety of an airport and a CBP processing facility not on the border and with apparently no contact with Americans living on the border proves she can with a straight face and without her normal deflecting her incompetency chuckle lie with the best of them, blaming who else but Trump and claiming “progress is being made” (if progress means achieving more illegals crossing the border which apparently is the Blues’ goal she is sadly right); Nike CEO seems to show where his loyalties lie claiming Nike is the brand of China and for China, ignoring China’s abysmal record of human rights abuses (If left believes that abuse of human rights is racist like almost everything else in our society they should cease buying Nike products); ESPN commentator Jalen Rose can complain that a white player was picked on the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team that’s OK but if a black player were picked on an otherwise white team like tennis, golf, or swimming an called a token there would be all Hell to pay; looks like the BLM movement has new competition on the block from a group of blacks claiming to be the Al Moroccan Empire which believes the blacks have special rights and privileges such that they are immune from obeying our laws as 4 of them entered a vacant house in New Jersey that had be purchased and was awaiting remodeling and repair, changed the locks and had to be arrested and removed by police; the Blues continue to prove that “racist” is the most overused word in the political dictionary as Red Representative Bob Good is called a racist by Blue Representative Donald Norcross for questioning Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on Critical Race Theory prompting Reds on the Education Committee to demand an apology from Norcross (sadly when Reds have no viable argument they quickly toss out the racist card to squelch any sane discussion of an issue they do not want discussed); Bubba Watson with an 8 shot lead on the Traveler’s Challenge on the Par 4 350 yard 2nd hole separated his driver’s head from the shaft on impact but still managed to place the ball 5 yards from the green to birdie the hole;  as Blues are pushing the false narrative that the Georgia Reds are engaging in black voter suppression by requiring voter IDs, leave it to the political cartoonist to portray the real voter suppression Reds are guilty of thanks to Schumer the Gloomer and Doomer:

Chicago Gun Violence: Hey Jackass.com is alive and well to collect data to show that through June 23, 2,021, gun violence involving mostly persons of color shooting mostly persons of color in Chicago is alive and well with 1832 persons shot of whom 318 have died.

Reflections on the Great Reunion of 1913: “The great reenactment of Pickett’s charge. . . .  Out of the woods came the Southerners, just as before - well, in some ways just as before.  They came out more slowly this time. . . .  We could see, not rifles and bayonets, but canes and crutches.  We soon could distinguish the more agile ones aiding those less able to maintain their places in the ranks.

Nearer they came, until finally they raised their frightening falsetto scream.  As the Rebel yell broke out after half a century of silence, a moan, a gigantic sigh, a gasp of unbelief, rose from the onlookers.  So “Pickett’s men” came on, getting close at last, throwing that defiant yell up at the stone wall and the clump of trees and the ghosts of the past.

It was then that the Yankees, unable to restrain themselves longer, burst from behind the stone wall, and flung themselves upon their former enemies.  The emotion of the moment was so contagious that there was scarcely a dry eye in the huge throng.  Now they fell upon each other - not in mortal combat, but reunited in brotherly love and affection.

The Civil War was over.” Ken Burns, from his PBS Documentary The Civil War
