Ridley's Believe It Or Not-This Day In History-May 5, 2014 Cinco de Mayo

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 5, 2014:    As always, after some searching, I found these holidays worthy of mention or celebrating in culinary fashion, to go with the factoids and quotes to enjoy as you are getting ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
             1. Cinco de Mayo–commemorating the victory over French forces on May 5, 1862 at Puebla, Mexico; and now a celebration of Mexican-American heritage and pride. A day to be wary on the highway as too many people celebrate the day with way too many tequilas and cervezas.
             2. International Midwives Day—celebrated in over 50 nations; first celebrated on May 5, 1991 and honors the contribution of midwives who in many developing countries deliver far more babies than doctors.
             3. National Hoagie Day—celebrating the official sandwich of Philadelphia although not sure how well it goes with a Corona.
             4. Totally Chipotle Day—what better way to encourage consumption of Tecate and Corona on Cinco de Mayo that to use some smoked dried jalapenos in your cuisine.
              5. Melanoma Monday—creating awareness of melanoma, deadly skin cancer that kills over 10,000 Americans yearly—today use the sun block and wear a sombrero when outside celebrating a Cinco de Mayo barbecue.
On this day in:
              a. 1904 Cy Young pitched the first perfect game in the modern baseball era against the Philadelphia Athletics.
              b. 1934 the first Three Stooges short, Women Haters was released.
              c. 1961 Alan B. Shepard became the first American to rocket into space on a sub-orbital flight, several months behind the orbital flight of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
Why driving may be a bit dicier on this day: “Cinco de Mayo has to be one of the best holidays in the world. Burritos, tacos, and beer, is there anything better?” Anon Actually there is--the numerous contributions to this country by Hispanics in all areas of life.
