September 25 History International Maritime Day

           a.1789 Congress passed the first ten amendments to the Constitution known as the Bill of Rights.                                                             
            b.1890 Congress established Sequoia National Park—If you like Redwoods this is the place to visit.
            c. 1911 construction was commenced on Fenway Park in Boston. 
            d. 1956 TAT-1 the first transatlantic submarine telephone cable was completed.
If you are going to fight make sure the fight is worth it: “There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights.” Smedley Butler noted Marine Corps Major General who at the time of his death in 1940 was the most decorated Marine in U.S. history.

Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving Day—celebrated annually since 1734 by the Schwenkfelder Society to give thanks for arriving in the Pennsylvania Dutch region to escape religious persecution in Europe. If invited today you might want to eat before going as the meal is water, bread, butter and apple butter.
          2. Gallbladder Good Health Day---celebrating that little organ located under the liver that promotes digestion; today avoid greasy foods and have an apple—gallstones  are incredibly painful.
          3. National Blue Bird of Happiness Day--“be like I, hold your head up high,

On this day in
             a.1946 Clark Gifford and George Elsey presented President Truman with a top secret report calling for containment of the Soviet Union, marking the beginning of the Cold War.                                                             
             b.1957 President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock to enforce desegregation of the public schools.
             c. 1968 60 Minutes debuted on CBS which until his death in 2011 at the age of 92 featured the “Last Word” commentary by Andy Rooney. 
             d. 2002 the first consumer internet service was launched by Compuserve.
Some words of wisdom to high school graduates wondering what to do with lives: “"We need people who can actually do things. We have too many bosses and too few workers. More college graduates ought to become plumbers or electricians, then go home at night and read Shakespeare." September 23 History National Voter Registration Day

          1. National Voter Registration Day—celebrating the need for all eligible adults to register to vote; far too many of us take the right to vote for granted and have opted out of the political process.
          2. Eight Is The Magic Number Day---celebrating the birth on this day in 1920 of Mickey Rooney whose career spanned over 80 years and yes was married eight times and probably kept a slew of divorce lawyers very happy.
          3. Ray Day – celebrating the birthday on this day in 1930 of the many called by Frank Sinatra “the only true genius in show business, “ Ray Charles who lost his sight at the age of seven.
          4. National Pancake Day—celebrating a great day to hop down to the closest IHOP for one of their delicious pancakes.

             b. 1911 Earle Ovington made the first air mail delivery under the authority of the U.S. Postal Service,888 the first issue of the National Geographic was published.                                                                  
             c. 2002 the first public version of the Mozilla Firefox browser (“Phoenix 1.0”) was released.

September 22 History One Web Day

          1. Autumnal Equinox—celebrating the passage of the Sun over the equator and the beginning of fall.
          2. One Web Day---promoting since 2006 awareness of the importance of the internet to our daily lives.
          3. Hobbit Day – celebrating the birthdays of two Hobbits—Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
          4. National Centenarians Day—celebrating those increasing number of humans who live to be 100 years or more—for the Alaskanpoet only 33 more years to go.  
          5. National Ice Cream Cone/National White Chocolate Day—a great bookend of food holidays to splurge on; enjoy!

             a. 1789 the office of snail mail was established in the United States; still in existence but losing money like you cannot believe.                                                             
             b. 1888 the first issue of the National Geographic was published.                                                                  
             c. 1975 Sara Jane Moore attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford, but was foiled by George Sipple; she was sentenced to life and was released on parole in 2007 after Ford’s death.
             d. 1991 the Dead Sea Scrolls were made available to public viewing for the first time by the Huntington Library.
