Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 15, 2014:    Trust all enjoyed a free biscuit at Popeye’s on National Buttermilk Biscuit Day and will enjoy these holidays, or celebrate in a culinary fashion, found for today along with the factoids and quote.

             1. International Day of Families—first observed per General Assembly Resolution on this day in 1994 to celebrate the importance and vital role of families, many of which are under great stress headed by a single parent or unwed parent.

             2. Police Officers Memorial Day—created by an Act of Congress in October, 1961 to honor on this day law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty (113 in 2013). If pulled over today by an officer wearing a black ribbon, be grateful we have first responders willing to die for our safety.

            3. Nylon Stocking Day—celebrating on this day in 1940 the introduction of nylon stockings to the public at Gimbels Department Store; female legs especially Betty Grable’s never looked better and the silk worms could now take days off in the fashion segment. 

            4. National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day/ National Pizza Party Day—Interesting combo to choose from or to celebrate both.

On this day in:

            a. 1940 McDonalds opened its first restaurant in San Bernardino, California (over 14,000 in the U.S. and over 30,000 worldwide today).  

            b. 1953 Cubmaster Don Murphy organized the first pinewood derby in Manhattan Beach, CA.

            c. 2010 Jessica Watson became the youngest person (three days prior to her 17^th birthday) to sail solo, unassisted around the world.

What more fitting way to remember those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty than a poem:

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 14, 2014:    Trust all enjoyed looking for a leprechaun yesterday after enjoying a bowl of Irish stew and will enjoy this sparse list of holidays found for today along with the factoids and quotes.

             1. Stars and Stripes Forever Day—celebrating the anniversary of the first public performance of John Phillips Souza’s march Stars and Stripes Forever on May 14, 1897 at Philadelphia with President McKinley in attendance.

             2. Underground America Day—celebrating not a rebirth of nuclear fallout shelters but rather to create awareness of the thousands of homeless people across this country that live in the tunnels of our major cities and appropriately observed the same day as Donate a Day’s Wages to Charity Day.

            3. Receptionist Day—celebrating the service of receptionists who are with voicemail and teleconferencing becoming an endangered species. 

            4. National Buttermilk Biscuit Day—I kid you not on this one and if any doubt go to Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken today and receive with your order a free one in celebration.

On this day in:

            a. 1796 Edward Jenner administered the first small pox vaccine in the first step of eradicating this deadly disease.  

            b. 1948 David Ben Gurion declared Israel to be an independent nation effective on the termination of the UN British Mandate the next day, thereby prompting the Arab Israel War of 1948.

             c. 2013 in a wakeup call not heard by us, President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria declared a state of emergency in three northeast states of Borno (site of recent kidnapping of 300 schoolgirls), Yobe and Adamawa due to the terrorist activities of Boko Haram, an organization which the Clinton State Department refused to label as a terrorist organization, a decision which may haunt Hillary Clinton in 2016.

As we pray that the innocents are not sold into slavery by Boko Haram, some sobering thoughts of what we are dealing with in radical Islam: "I was shown the hell- fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful"  "If it had been given me to order someone to prostrate themselves in front of someone other than God, I would surely have ordered women to prostrate themselves in front of their husbands."  Hadith, Mohammad's Tradition

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 13, 2014:    Trust all enjoyed creating limericks yesterday and will enjoy this sparse list of holidays found for today along with the factoids and quotes.

             1. National Leprechaun Day—here is a great mystery of life beyond the comprehension of even the Alaskanpoet whose eldest son was born on St. Patrick’s Day—this day almost 60 days after St. Patrick’s Day. Ponder the question over some Irish soda bread or a large bowl of Irish stew.

             2. Frog Jumping Day—celebrating our amphibian friends and linked to Mark Twain’s first short story published in 1865 as Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog.  

            3. National Apple Pie Day—celebrating the dessert which is about as American as American can be especially when served a la mode. 

On this day in:

            a. 1958 Ben Carlin became the first and only person to circumnavigate the Earth in an amphibious vehicle, traveling 11,000 miles by sea and 39,000 miles by land and taking 10 years to complete the feat.  

            b. 1985 in a classic case of overkill, Philadelphia police trying to end an armed standoff at MOVE headquarters set off a bomb which killed 11 MOVE members and destroyed the homes of 250 nearby residents.

            c. 1994 the icon of late night television, Johnny Carson, made his last television appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—May 12, 2014:    Trust all enjoyed the holiday yesterday and will enjoy the holidays found for today along with the factoids and quote and a limerick composed in honor of Limerick Day.

             1. International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness  Day—this is one disease not really well known or easily diagnosed that  you do not want to have since no amount of coffee or Red Bull will overcome its effects.

             2. Limerick Day—another reason why the Irish, especially the poets among them,  should rule the world-- There once was a poet from Sandy Beach/That the bergs from le Conte would reach/Blue white mounds of ice on the sand/No wonder Alaska is the Great Land/Clams below chilled for him to beseech

             3. Odometer Day—celebrating the invention of the odometer on this day in 1847. 

             4. National Nutty Fudge Day—another great food idea that will defer dieting after the sumptuous Mother’s Day brunch you may have enjoyed yesterday.          

On this day in:

              a. 1935 Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith (the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous) met for the first time in Akron, Ohio.

              b. 1941 Konrad Zuse presented the Z3, the world’s first working programmable, fully automatic computer in Berlin, which fortunately for the Allies was not deemed to be important to the German war effort.

              c. 2008 U.S. Immigration agents conducted the largest-ever raid of a workplace in Postville, Iowa, arresting almost 400 illegal aliens many of whom given the current administration’s policies are probably back in this country.
