      1. Halloween—Tonight is the night that drivers in residential neighborhoods must drive oh so carefully as the streets as clogged with young ghosts and goblins weaving under the weight of bags full of candy and later the roads will be clogged with adults in costume driving back from Halloween parties.
      2. Books for Treats Day—celebrated since 1995 an idea created by Rebecca Morgan at her home in San Jose  of “feeding children’s minds not their cavities.” Great idea to give used children’s books as opposed to candy (probably cheaper too).
      3. 7 Billion Day—commemorating this day in 2011 according to the best estimates of the U.N. that population of the Earth reached 7 billion; the day is to be observed by creating awareness of  reproductive health, poverty, women empowerment, youth, environment sustainability, ageing, and urbanization, by encouraging people to take actions and recommit to humanity.
      4. Now You Know Who To Blame—wcelebrating not the proclivity of politicians to blame the other party but rather the difficulties in achieving weight loss occasioned by the birthday on this day in 1860 of Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts U.S.A., the organization that brings us those delicious Girl Scout cookies we find so hard to resist.
      5. National Caramel Apple Day—celebrating a treat that is both  great for your health (apple) and great for dentists (caramel).
On this day in
      a. 1913 the Lincoln Highway, the first highway across the United States from New York City to San Francisco, was dedicated.
        b. 1941 after 14 years of work, Mt. Rushmore was completed.
       c. 1984 Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh security guards, causing widespread rioting in India in which over 10,000 Sikhs were killed.
      d. 2000 a Russian Soyus rocket brought the first resident crew to the International Space Station which has been occupied continuously and amicably since then (why can we not have the same concept on Earth)?
Reflections on Halloween as you check to make sure the candy bowl is full and your costume and the costume of your trick or treaters is ready to go: 1. “ I'll bet living in a nudist colony takes all the fun out of Halloween.” ~Author Unknown; 2. “Eat, drink and be scary.” ~Author Unknown; 3. “True love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about but few have seen.” ~Author Unknown  Please enjoy the 140 character poems on events of interest on my twitter account below (if you like them, retweet and join almost 150 growing followers and please follow me) and follow my blogs. After this, men can believe anything, expect anything. Don't any of you be surprised in future if land beasts change places with dolphins and go to live in their salty pastures, and get to like the sounding waves of the sea more than the land, while the dolphins prefer the mountains." May refer to a total solar eclipse of 6 April 648 B.C. Archilochus, Greek poet (c680-640 B.C.)

Reflections on the importance of poets in a society: “Every age has its own poetry; in every age the circumstances of history choose a nation, a race, a class to take up the torch by creating situations that can be expressed or transcended only through poetry.” Jean-Paul Sartre Another reason why we need fewer parasitic lawyers and more poets

On this day in
       a. 1950 Iran became the first country to participate in Truman’s Point Four Program, a program designed to bring American technology and know-how to developing countries in agriculture, industry and health to aid in their development—It is a safe bet that the mullahs in Iran have long since forgotten the aid given to that country under the program.

       c. 2003 Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

Reflections as the baby boomers start nearing their life expectancy: "I am  not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather he will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?”

Ridley's Believe It Or Not—October 18, 2014:  Trust your weekend is off to a good start and that you enjoy the holidays and observances, factoids and  quotes from a note African American poet Maya Angelou, with a smile on your sunscreened face, looking forward to a chocolate cupcake as a treat, blessed with a positive attitude, and secure in the knowledge that if you want to find a gift for a memorable event or the coming Christmas, you know that the Alaskanpoet can provide you with a unique customized poem at a great price tailored to the event and the recipient.

      1. Alaska Day—celebrating one of the great coups of American diplomacy; this day in 1867 that Russia transferred Alaska to the United States for the paltry sum of $7.2 million (about $114 million in today’s dollars or about a day and a half of the value of the oil pumped through TAPS; if you see an Alaskan today hug that person (today the Alaskanpoet will be wearing a red Stanford polo and hugs are always welcome).

       d. 1954 Texas Instruments announced the first transistor radio.
Reflections on why we need more poets and fewer lawyers:  There is nothing so pitiful as a young cynic because he has gone from knowing nothing to believing nothing. The main thing in one's own private world is to try to laugh as much as you cry. Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns all clean.  Self-pity in its early stages is as snug as a feather mattress. Only when it hardens does it become uncomfortable.” Maya Angelou noted African American poet who recited a poem at Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993
